~ The Nugget Is California’s Leadnmg Mining Weekly _ Nevada City Nugget 2 VOLUME V, NUMBER 41 THE GOLD CENTER THE NEVADA CilY NUGGET, CALIFORNIA YHE COUNTY SEAT PAPER FRIDAY, OCT. 16, 1938 "BELIEVE IT OR NOT BUT ig FRISKY IS BACK HOM: Believe it or not. Ripley will be glad to get this story; and it happened right here in Burlingame. \ . Xt sounds impossible, but Frisky the year-old female squirrel, left in June at Quaker Hill, nine miles east of Nevada City, California, and 200 miles from here, returned this morn-, ing to the home of Commander John E. Pond, 1315 Bernal avenue. In August, 1930, Pond, his sister and three sons, were camping near Quaker Hill en route, home from a two-month’s vacation in the Sierras. Early one morning they. were awakened by a commotion in a tall pine tree overhead. There ;' _was_a falling of leaves and branches . and they observed a furry ball fall, to; the ground. This proved to be three baby gray squirrels apparently uninfiured by their fall of over 100 feet. They were picked up by the Pond boys, nursed on a medicine dropper and brought home. Two did not survive but one lively little female grew fat and became a great family pet. It had the run of the Pond yard and built a nest on the top of an acacia tree opposite the boy’s sleeping porch window. : As time went on Frisky’s claws grew too long and sharp and complaints came in that. his playfulness ‘Was causing too much damage to ladies’ silk stockings. Frisky had to be deprived of her freedom so Commander Pond decided to take her back to her original home in the mountains. This was done early this June and Frisky was bid a sad farewell when the Ponds broke camp. . This morning the Pond boys heard! * a chattering and a_ scolding in Frisky’s acacia tree. Going to investigate they gave Frisky’s call and the waquirrel came running to meet its \old friends. Frisky was recognized ‘by all members of -the family and there is no doubt of Brisky's identity. Frisky today is probably the hapPpiest squirrel in California. PLATINUM FOUND TO BE By W. L. Parsons in Trinity Journal: It is generally understood that mercury will not attract platinum, and if one attempts to amalgamate segregated particles of platinum it will not amalgamate and neither will it be attracted by mercury unless the quicksilver is actuated, but when we amalgamate gold in the usual way, and assuming platinum to be present, a certain amount of platinum will invariably be picked up in cohesion with the <gold. . Miners have been doing this very Nhing for years gone by without knowing it, ‘salting the’ gold with platinum’ and here let it be noted that it looks rather curious and sus‘picious the refiners failed to say anything about it. My discovery of this secret was yvather astonishing and proved that in this particular experiment about 20 per cent of the raw aunties, . was platinum which was picked up in cohesion with the gold. It behooves the miner to reclaim. the platinum from the amalgam, or retorted amalgam before -he makes sale of the gold, or another way is to actuate the mercury and amalgamate the gold and platinum together and makesale of the bullion with the knowledge of a certain : j;amount of platinum present, which can be determined by analysis. \ (The platinum content of the re-!: torted gold amalgam should be de-. termined by the seller’ before he j;makes sale and it should be paid for by the refiner. iAssay returns on the Neocene' gravel mine, owned by Goerings west . . of Nevada City, show that the gravel . . earries a certain percentage of platii num, CTY OF SIK IS WORKING CREW OF MEN’ The City of Six above Downietthe contact vein which was picked ‘up some time ago in this property while the mine was being worked for its rich gold bearing gravel. OLD MILL TAILINGS ARE MINED ON KANAKA CREEK Three men have’ found a novel way of beating old hard times. Up on Kanaka Creek near Downieville they are working the old mill taik ings with a crude arastra. They made the arasta of concrete and are using stones for the grinding mill. They also use an old Ford differential for driving and water wheel for power. By this crude method they are said to recover $12 to $36 a day. One man acts as cook and packs the supplies into camp while the other two tend the arasta. In the early days of mining only ; about 45% of the values were re-. been made in the same orebody and . covered the rest going into the; that the new discovery proves its tailings.
