If we were searching for a name descriptive of this present season in world history, we might call it the era of Much Talk. Listen for a day and you will readily perceive that every body is talking and that every body is talking about everything; The I. Q. of al! this talk ranges all the way from that which is highly illuminative to that which leads the listener through obscure jungles of confusion. ' It is indeed hard to discuss a subject with any degree of lucidity, unless one has all around knowledge of the subject under observation and few of us have that all around knowledge; still, we talk of this and that and every thing else and fee] quite competent to pass’ judgement upon the great and near great, the things they do and the words they speak. No one has an inferiority complex when it comes to passing judgement, no one seems to doubt the-correctness of_his_opinions . “and so we who must listen, hear contending voices raised in cool or heated argument and more often than otherwise, wonder what it is all about and who is right: Curious admissions are being made here and there. Mr. Stalin, for instance, asks for a postponement of the general assembly and the excuse is offered, that he has not enough trained diplomats to use in two places at one time. If Mr. Stalin will lend his ears to the discussions of the Paris conference, he will'learn that the great western powers are in the same fix. The stubborn leaders of the maritime strike which is crippling our sea ports at the present time, calls upon Washington ‘to nationalize the meat industry,’’ Consistent, isn't it? We are told that our American school system is the best in the world and again we are told that it fails to give to young America that degree of enlightenment concerning the nation and its institutions which every prospective citizen should have and that, in consequence, the young people are developing half baked ideas, some of which border on communism. It is all very confusing and if we are not expert analysts, it might be well to suspend judgement upon important subjects controversial, until we.can get our own-ideas in proper shape and begin to see things as they really are. One must be willing to grow up, if he wishes to understand his time and place in the confused pattern of daily events, for only mature minds can grasp their potentialities and properly evaluate the pros and cons. ; Uncle Silas says: ““One may develop an agile mind these days; believing one thin togday and just the opposite tomorrow. An agile mind is perhaps desirable, but when it becomes acrobatic—that is something else.’-—Adeline Merriam Conner> NEVADA CITY SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO ) —AND— FIFTY YEARS AGO NEVADA CITY 75 YEARS AGO .
