THE TIDE TURNS—WHY?
Why has no bombs been dropped over London in the
last sixty days?
_ Why has the Atlantic——the life-line of Britain — been
made safe again?
Why have the Nazi submarines—which Hitler terrifyingly described as his ‘pack of wolves,’ been apparently reduced to the meekness of lambs?
Why aren’t the French Fleet and the
Army a part of Hitler’s military minions?
Why haven't the Japanese in the Pacific and Germany
jn the Atlantic been challenging America’s one-ocean navy
with a tewo-ocean thréat? .
Why. have the Latin-American Republics been turning
their backs on Germany? Why have the occupied countries
of Europe, including “‘Petainized’’ France, been showing increased signs of restlessness and resistance?

examples as THINKING OUT LOUD
Why don't the American isolationists still speak of the
hopelessness of the battle of Britain and the futility, if not the
folly, of sending supplies for a losing fgiht? :
These are some of the questions that have no doubt been
suggested to the minds of even the most casual observers during the last ten weeks or more—more specifically since the
outbreak of the Russo-German war of June 22.
These are questions that imply a change in the conflict
abroad in favor of the allies in marked contrast to the dark disaster that appeared to envelop the western democracies a year
ago with the fall of France, and with the furious attempt of the
German Luftwaffe to flatten out Britain with mass-air bombings.
ea The answers to these questions lie primariiy in the
“magnificent resistance’’ of Russia to the Nazi juggernaut. It
is a resistance which, in the language of Raymond Clapper,
writing from London on last Tuesday, “has made the biggest
change in the fundamental balance of the war.”’ It is a resistance that is an extension of the resistance of Britain to the
eastern front, in the sense that if Russia goes down, Britain
may go down, and that if Russia stands up. Britain will stand
up—so great is the inter-dependence. No American can wish
‘the one well. without wishine the other well; and to indulge
_ the prejudice that Germany should annihilate Russia, but that
Britain should annihilate Germany—an experience that John
Gunther related of an American woman ‘“‘upper cruster’’—is
to risk a bloody catastrophe.
In terms of American interests, aid to Russia is aid to
America. It is aid that is comparable to a community of citizens supplying rounds of ammunition to their policemen in
order to keep a ring of gangsters from preying on their lives
and property. You may not like the paunch or politics of the
policeman, but they are a lesser poison than the gangsters
themselves. While there is nothing noble in an on-looking
community of citnzens arming their policemen for a desperate
battle against gangsters, there is good sense in helping those
who want to help them.
America must come of age. The criss-cross of emotions
and contradictions of the mind must yield to the clear task to
stand united against the enemy who preys on confusion.—

We are spending millions of dollars to erect big dams in the Northwest. They were started mostly
for irrigation purposes. Now it is

on these and similar projects so
they may be used for power in

Now we have a group advocating
