However intimately or disastrously

Regarding the chief of police and

read:
“The books of this office were also found to be in excellent condition, with all issued licenses duly accounted for by payments into the

Regarding the treasurer, the report. read:
“A neat and exact set of books had

before cashing them. This causes
unnecessary bookkeeping, and the!
practice should be discontinued. .
“The judge’ explained to us that

the dockets were not ifn satisfactory

are open, and it is suggested that .
these be reviewed by the chief of

LECTURES HERE
ON CHRISTIAN
SCIENCE
“Man is the indisputable witnesy
to the presence of Life’, said Peter
V. Ross, C. S. B., of San Francisco,
in a lecture on Christian Science
given last Friday night at the Ele. mentary School Auditorium
' Mr. Ross, a member of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship of
The Mother Church, The First
Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, spoke here under the auspices
of Nevada City Christian Society,
MAN_AN EXHIBIT OF LIFE
“Tt is through man,”’ Mr. Ross continued, ‘‘that everlasting Life is made
manifest: Man therefore cannot do
otherwise than feel the constant exuberance of life. Really then he cannot know suffering because Life can
brook no onosition. The functions
of Life cannot ‘be silenced or slowed
down. They are in perpetual and unlabored operation even to the uttermost recesses of real being, One who
meditates on these truths, reasons
them out, and assimilates them, will
gradually prove the Christian Science proposition that disease is belief, mesmerism, appearance, ignorance as distinguished from actuality.

“A person who with divine help
isolates any malady takes a decisive
‘step toward undermining and _ extinguishing it. He will not ask how
the ailment has come about or why it
has taken hold of him. Rather’ will
he challenge its claim to presence or
existence. He will face mortal mind,
which would foist the deception upon him, and deny its insinuations
with the truth. And the truth is that
real consciousness, a consciousness
which is aware of no evil or distress.
Therefore mortal mind, with its
arguments of suffering and sickness,
is powerless in its pretensions—indeed is non-existent, having no part
n the universe of eternal Life in
hich we have our being,
“Tt is not difficult for the person
to see and declare that the malady
which tries to disturb him is belief, . :
jert up to the gates of the Promised
. Land, he at times wavered. He doubtignorance or dream, because Life is
God, and hence is continuously glorious and immune from disease. But
he is prone to nullify in some measure his heroic and heartening deelaration by claiming the belief or
dream as his own, when in fact it is
not. The dream and the dreamer are
one, the disease and the diseased are
one, but that one is not man. It is
the dream’s dream, the illusion’s illusion. It is, as Jesus said, according
to Moffatt’s translation, a ‘liar and
the father of lies’.’’
HIS PRESENCE
Speaking of the availability of
divine intelligence, the speaker proceeded: ‘‘When Moses. was engaged
in the giant enterprise of leading his
peo} 2» from Egypt through the desed his capacity for the undertaking.
Then came to him the word from
God, ‘My presence shall go with
thee.’ How many times have you,
when faced with sudden danger, acted with ‘presence of, mind?’ You did
what unseen intelligence directed
you to do. So imminent was the danger that you ‘had no time to consider
or to argue, You acted, ‘without
doubt or hesitation, upon the divine
impulse, and did the thing or took
the course which brought you into
safety.
