made little sense. In later years van der Pas supplied me with the corrected version that appears in this digital
collection. As Peter’s eyes and general health began to fail, I offered to prepare the Bulletins on my computer,
and this I have continued to do for the past twenty years.
It should be noted that not all “history” is true, even in a publication of the NCHS. In fact, in many firstperson accounts the authors warn that some of what they relate may not be entirely true, even though based on
sources they are inclined to trust. Such stories as that by Mary Hallock Foote in the October 1981 Bulletin
(“How the Pump Stopped at the Morning Watch’) or by David Comstock in July 1982 (“Two Peoples”) are
historical fiction based upon actual events. On the other hand, “The Mysterious Indian of Grass Valley,” by
Albert Monson (March 1951) which originally appeared in an 1896 San Francisco Chronicle Sunday
Supplement, has no basis in fact. Somewhere in between are a few essays written by highschool students who
took part in contests sponsored by the Society. In some cases their authors pose as historical figures who then
proceed to describe events in an amusing but careless manner. The weakness of these contests is that students
often are coached by drama teachers to produce monologues and they are judged by lay audiences who admire
their ability to entertain. This criticism does not apply to all entries, however, and many of the student essays
published in our Bulletins are well done.
