2. During the 1870s and 1880s the county’s Chinese
population was between 600-1000 people. Wallace
R. Hagaman, Chinese Temples of Nevada City and
Grass Valley, California 1868-1938. Nevada City: The
Cowboy Press, p. 7.
Hagaman, p. 3 and p. 14.
4. “Our Chinese Campmeeting Described by an Eastern
Visitor,” Grass Valley Daily Union, October 1, 1876,
p. 2.
5. The Elevator, Part 1, April 26, 1873, p. 2 and Part 2,
May 3, 1873, p. 2.

7. Here Bell borrows a poem written in 1838 by the
English essayist Leigh Hunt inspired by Jane Walsh,
the wife of Thomas Carlyle.
8. ‘Mud Hill” was the name Jennie used in her articles
as the location for her residence on American Hill. She
opined that the hills of Nevada City were segregated
by race and class, but in winter they were all equally
muddy.
9. “Semper Fidelis” was a pen name used by Jennie in her
columns in The Elevator.
10. Bell was sixty-five at the time of his visit. It’s not
clear what kind of rubber suite Bell wore, but their use
in mines has been documented elsewhere, including
a case where one was worn by the Irish playwright,
Oscar Wilde when he descended into the Matchless
Mine in Leadville, Nevada, in 1882.
11. Perhaps the Manzanita Mine.
12. Isaac and Chasey Sanks.
