150 AUGUST 22, 23, 26, 28, 1877 GRASS VALLEY UNION of Cornwall, England. The funeral will take place from the family residence, on Bank street, near Bennett, to-day at 21/2 o’clock P.M. Services at the M. E. Church at 3 o’clock. NEW BRASS BAND.—A number of Grass Valley boys, of musical tastes, have organized a brass band, under the name of the “Grass Valley Home Social Band.” They start with a membership of eighteen, and with two exceptions are all boys, varying in age from ten to sixteen years. They have elected for their officers: A. Thornton, President; Win. Cryer, Vice President; H. Wohler, Jr., secretary; John Frank, Jr., Treasurer. Prof. Chas. Hock, a teacher of considerable experience, will be the instructor of the band. He has taught a similar organization of boys at Nevada city, who have made very satisfactory progress, for the short time of their organization. The instruments for the new band arrived by Express last night, and instruction will commence at once, three lessons a week being given. The inmates of the County Jail—numbering 10—present a very motley appearance just now, two being women, three Chinamen, one negro, one Indian, one crazy man and eight white men.—Nevada Transcript. PUBLIC SCHOOLS.—The Fall term of the Public Schools of Grass Valley will commence on Monday next, August 27th. Those pupils who have not been examined for higher grades, but desire to be, and those about to enter the schools for the first time, are requested to present themselves for examination at the High School Room, to-morrow, Thursday, 23d, in the forenoon. THURSDAY, AUGUST 23, 1877 THE EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION.—The regular meeting of the Nevada County Educational Association will be held at the High School building, Grass Valley, Saturday Aug. 25th, commencing at 10 o’clock A.M. The association have prepared a interesting programme for the meeting, and a general discussion relative to school work will take place. All interested are invited to be present. OPERA TROUPE COMING.—The Richings Bernard English Opera Company with thirty artists are coming. The troupe is direct from De Bar’s Opera House, St. Louis, where they had a very successful Season. They will appear at Hamilton Hall, on Monday and Tuesday evenings, September 3d and 4th. REPAIRED.—The portion of the V Flume, which gave way near the Pittsburg mine last week, has been fully repaired, and the town reservoir is again receiving its usual ample supply of water. SUNDAY, AUGUST 26, 1877 BORN. At San Juan, August 20, 1877, to O. P. SMITH and Wife, a Son. DIED. At San Juan, August 23, 1877, LESTER, son of Simon and Polixene Furth, aged 3 years, 6 month and 3 days. The ball given at Hamilton Hall Friday night for the benefit of a deserving widow lady, was a great success. The attendance was exceedingly good and the music was very fine. All present had an evening of great enjoyment. As many purchased tickets who did not find time to attend the ball, and as the attendance was quite large, we judge that the benefit was substantial.
