His war paint is fading slightly now, with the passing oftime, but there is still a gleam on the surface of the upraised tommyhawk..the feathered headdress is standing stiffly upright, and his beads and other items of attire bespeak warrior status in
whatever tribe he represents. The "Wooden Indian" in thewindow of Shaw's Antiques, 210 Main Street, Nevada City, may well be considered the self-appointed guardian of a store full of antiques attesting to the fabled past of Nevada County. And Maudie May Shaw, owner and gracious proprietor, has a genuine love for and appreciation of that past..and for the facinating array of her "stock in trade." Shaw's is noted as the first real "antique shop" in all of Nevada County; and was earlier known as the "Merchandise Exchange," circa 1948. Mrs, Shaw buys from and sells to aclientel which comes from near and far to visit this "landmark" establishment. For the serious collector or the casual visitor there are hundreds of items to inspect and/or select from..and -several hours should be scheduled for this purpose to really do the shop justice. Among the reminders of past eras one finds old branding irons, Indian baskets, beautiful jewelry, clothing, hanging and stand lamps from the Victorian days of formal room decor; old steamer trunks, Franklin stoves, carved furniture some inlaid with stunning marble and mother of pearl; many paintings and old prints, fanciful figurines intricately designed and carved; Grandfather and mantle clocks; stunning candelabra in a variety of styles; kitchen utensiles and dining services..the list is seemingly endless, Outstanding items include the old safe originally used in the OWNER OF SHAW'S Antique Store in Nevada City is Audie May Shaw who shows some of the many rare items available at the store. Ott Assay Office nearby, in the heyday of the County's mining activity. It is in daily use at Shaws.. and bears the name of Emil J. N. Ott over the heavy vault door in gold. Then there are the old phonographs..the original "family entertainment centers" of a bygone era. Two notable models are the "Duplex" with the double horns,.. manufactured some time before the turn of the century; and a really-rare "Fairy Phonograph" built into a solid bronze electric lamp base.. a collector's dream, really. Shaw's is open six days weekly, usually from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., or by appointmentand it is closed on Mondays. In her leisure time, Maudie May delights in her beautiful Victorian home in Nevada City, where her garden is a primary interest; and where she entertains many visitors. Her other interests are many, as attested to by her membership in such local organizations as the County Historical Society, Liberal Arts Commission, California Heritage Council, Community Theatre Group, and the Order of Eastern Star. A visit to Shaw's Antiques may be considered a walk into the past; and Mrs, Shaw will warmly welcome those who may care to browse just as she does the prospective buyer of some of her treasures. Her appraisals of antiques are based on a keen knowledge and highest integrity..she knows her area and its people well, and is a delightful conversationalist. At your earliest opportunity, make it a point to drop in and meet her, you'll find the occasion a rewarding and pleasant one.
