NEVADA CITY residents attending Saturday's picnic held by the volunteer fire dept. are shown eating the plentiful food, About 140 persons turned out for the annual event, New Rule High Cost Of Trucking Studied For years the high cost of truck transportation has hampered expansion of local industris in the Grass Valley-Nevada City area, an area which depends almost entirely on truck transportation. Could these rates be made competitive with those for other areas as an aid to promote economic growth? The Nevada County OEDP Committee, appointed by the board of supervisors to study the county’s economic ill, asked the help of the newly-formed Nevada County Chamber of Commerce to find out what could be done and how to go about it. After several months of investigation by the county chamber with various business people in the communities and motor truck carriers, the committee found that tariff rates could be im‘ proved with the cooperation of carriers and a united front by local shippers and receivers. The first step was to obtain published interstate tariff rates. Through the assistance of Jack Crawford, tariff rate consultant, the local motor truck carriers agreed to approach the Rocky Mountain Tariff Bureau to obtain published transcontinental freight rates for interstate shipments. The work of the county chamber and the OEDP Committee shows promise of favorable action in the very near future to secure competitive freight truck rates. John Gallegos, executive manager of the county chamber, reports that class rates similar to those enjoyed by Marysville and Yuba City are likely to be obtained. This would be a substantial reduction in many motor freight rates to shippers and receivers in the Grass Valley and Nevada City areas, and should prove to be a boon to the economy of these communities. The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce July 21 adopted the purchase order system for all purchases by and for the organization. To be valid, suchorders must bear the signature of a member of the finance committee, they being until further notified. Hunters under 18 must have a prior year’s license or evidence of satisfactory completion of a state-approved hunter safety training course in order to obtain a license.
