Giants’ jacket day
This week fifty years ago}
On September 1, communications with Japan were at a
standstill after the terrific earthquake 24 hours earlier. Most of
Tokyo was rubble and in flames. Thousands were either-homeless
or believed dead following the first major shock. Aftershocks were ;
creating panic and making rescue work almost totally impossible, -A
and were being recorded on seismographs the world over. World.
wide reaction was being reflected in the immediate offers of all. =
kinds of aid. President Calvin Coolidge ordered the U. S. Pacific =
Fleet, then in oriental waters, to proceed to Japan with all speed" ᤀ⸀
and render assistance to the fullest extent within his authority to ~

Mrs. Hannah Davis Perkins died suddenly at her summer 4
place in New Hampshire. She was born in Monte Cristo, near 4
Downieville, in 1854 and grew to young womanhood over in 3
7 Wheatland. She was graduated from Mills Seminary for Young j
~ Women in 1876. A talented singer, she had two years previously }
~ sung a duet with Miss Emma Wixon at the commencement ;
; exercises there. Miss Wixon was later to be known as Emma e.,
Nevada, world-renowned diva. In 1876, Miss Davis was married to
H. C. Perkins, then superintendent of the famous Malakoff Mine in
¢ Bloomfield. :

Editorial Comment: ‘Traffic Officer Joe Blake is taking a
course which should have a salutary effect in stopping abuses of the
highway laws. He patrols constantly, issuing warnings and making
arrests in flagrant cases. It is the business of all good citizens to

support and aid this able officer and to uphold and respect the rules

and 15 with preparations
beginning on September 13.

at the end of August for a hunter

membership agreed.
On September 6 the Nevada
County Historical Society will be
hosted by the Grange for their
annual meeting in Rough and
Ready. The Evangeline Chapter
O.E.S. will hold a skit entitled
‘*A Musical and Tea in 1873”’. All
Grange members and friends
are invited to attend.
