. « < Ee " Q The Nugget. ..Decembér 14,1966 im ven ae Lae NEVADA COUNTY NUGGET I0IT021115 a 4 } Christmas Time is that time of year when we all become infused with the spirit of expectancy; when we take a look at what we have been doing and what wewishto do. The kids don't have a monopoly of the spirit of giving and the hope of receiving. It's a wonderful feeling, the spirit of Christmas is, to be sure, but lets take a look at ourselves and after doing so then it may be that things will take on a new light. We have strayed far afield from the spirit of old when our Christmas Carols were written and when we paid homage to the one man in our history who taught us that life was one of sacrifice and good deeds. Now-a-days we are concerned only with buying gifts for exchange; this has brought on our modern Commercialism which has spoiled the image of Christmas. .Wouldn't it be nice if we could resolve to observe the spirit. of Christmas the year ‘round? At any rate it is our pleasant task to pause for the one day, eat a lot and sing a lot and make the children happy, with their new toys. We get go enthused about this that we sometimes get into the ‘act-and push the children aside for we want to play with those toys..Christmas is for little Children. The older folks can enjoy it by helping them enjoy it..Come on now and lets all sing "Silent Night" and wind up with "Jingle Bells." MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU!!! Miners Hospital Lowers Drug Prices The Board of Directors of Sierra Nevada Memorial and Miners Hospital have now authorized a10 to 15 percent reduction of the charges for drugs prescribed for hospital patients. For those not familar with having ore samples assayed, Mr. Marchetti gives the following procedures: The ore sample is crushed and then pulverized, then a random sample is chosen by placing the ore in a device witha multitude of tubular outlets therefore using the rule of probability. The sample is then weighed to represent one ounce to one ton of ore. It is then placed in a crucible with silver, litharge (oxide of lead) flour and flux. The sample is then heated in the Assayer's furnace and left until all these components are molten. The flour turns to charcoal and the litharge and silver gather the gold and carry it to the bottom of the crucible; the silica teing lighter will float on top of the crucible. The crucible is then removed from the furnace which is now 1000 to 1200 degrees. The silver is poured from the top of the crucible and the remainder is poured into cavity mold. In this you now have lead, silver and gold. When the sample is cooled it is placed in a "cupel". The cupel isa refactory product made from bone meal and cement; it is then placed in the furnace at 750 degrees and again melted, the cupel will absorb all of the lead except the amount that goes off as gas, leaving the "button of Silver" and gold. The button is then weighed on Assayer's scales, the amount of silver placed in the crucible is known, the total weight now represents, gold, silver that was
Letters To. The Editor To The Editor First I would like . to apoligize to a certain person thatasked me how many seats I have in the Old Nevada Theatre. I told him none as I am on a pension and I can't afford one. But I told him if [had the money I would buy two tickets. One for me and the other for my horse, his name is Archibald, This certain person got @—little burnt up, I think what he had been drinking kind of helped to. He wanted to know if I was trying to make a fool of him. I told him no, as nature had done a pretty good job. . I would ‘like to tell you What I got in to years' ago. I was over in Canada and I hada good stake I thought I would come back to the States fora while. A long freight just pulling out was the perfect way, so I jumped into a gondola. » Aman told me to watch out at the small town: just across the border, and sure enough the train stopped and a man asked ifIhad anymoney. When Itoldhim no, he took me to the little jail they had there. [had nearly three hundred dollars in a money belt but I was not going to give that to any of it. . The next day we went in a school house to be tried. Icould see the depot and a train just pulling out. As I said I was sitting near a window and some nut opened the school house door aid « yelled fire. Talk about a ‘scramble, the judge and the rest of the law went out the door. There was another young guy in jail too and I yelled "Lets get out of here"! I ran for the train that was pulling out, and caught it about in the middle. I rode it out of town and jumped off on the other side of town and circled around the town and walked back over into Canada. I knew that the train would be stopped at the next station and searched. I asked the agent when thenext passenger would come through. Ihad time ~.so I bought a suit case and a couple of work shirts anda pair of overalls. I had coveralls on to keep my suit clean, I put them in the suit case and also a cap,-I hada small black crusher hat I kept rolled up in my pocket. When the train left I was onit. Sure enough the train was stopped for three or four stations. Theysure wanted me bad. You see there was no fire! They caught the other young guy. When they came through the train he looked at me and winked. He kept his mouth shut tho, and I sent him some money when I landed in a large Shingle Weaving town. Don't try to figure where itis.
