The Nevada County District
Fair Board met last week in the
Home Economics Building at the
Fairgrounds with an enthusiastic
group of flower and show exhibitors.
Many of the exhibitors present
have been showing flowers at the
fair since it began inthe late ‘30s.
For many years local flower exhibitors have wanted to limit entries to residents of Nevada
County, but the Fair Board felt
there were not enough local exhibitors to make a good flower
show. At that time, which was
inthe early ‘50s, there were only
about 30 local people displaying
flowers and entries totaled around
400 to 500.
This past year found over 60
local exhibitors with a list of entries totaling over 700, the highest number of flower entries ever
exhibited in the history of the
local Fair.
Numerous suggestions and requests were made to meet with
theBoard and present their views
and reasons why the flower show
should be limited to residents of
Nevada County in 1964. It was
felt by local exhibitors that due
tothe local higher elevation and
later season, it wasn't fair to
them to have to show against those
exhibitors from the lower elevations of Placer County.
Everyone present agreed to enter more flowers and encourage
their friends to exhibit. Local
garden clubs are expected to help
encourage new exhibitors, probably conducting practice sessions
in arrangements as it was noted
several experienced flower arrangers are available for this purpose.
The Fair Board members were
concerned about losing the 200
entries that Placer County exhibitors have been entering, but
were assured by everyone present
that through new local exhibitors
that would enter and an increase
