New Roadside Rests At
The Summit Are Completed
A pair of scenic safety roadside
rests completed this week now
add to the motorist's pleasure of
crossing Donner Summit via fourlane Interstate 80 freeway over
the high Sierra.
Approximately two miles east
of Soda Springs, at a more-than7,000 -foot elevation, both eastand westbound lanes provide easy
access to spacious, paved rest
areas, complete with picnic
tables and comfort facilities.
Constructed by the California
Division of Highways, each rest
area features parking places for
30 cars and 16 trucks, six picnic
tables, refuse cans, and redwood
buildings containing comfort
stations. Al! facilities are designed to complement the rustic
environment, and a natural rock
"divider" separates truck -parking
from auto-parking. A curbed
sidewalk runs between parking
lots and picnic table areas.
Two miles before he reaches it,
large, blue signs alert the motorist thathe is approaching the rest
area,
Grading, paving and curb construction for the safety roadside
rests was included with the relocation of 10 1/2 miles of
Interstate 80 between a half-mile
west of Soda Springs and Donner
Park Overcrossing, which was
opened to motorists about a year
ago.

Local Guards Join Special Unit
Lieutenaft General Roderic L.
Hill, The oie Adjutant General,
has announced that the Department of Defense had approved
the California National Guard's
plan for organization of the 49th
Infantry Brigade as a Selected
Reserve Force, effective December 4. The new brigade will
begin its accelerated training
schedule in December.
The weapons platoon of Company B, First Battalion, 184th
Infantry with headquarters in
Nevada City, will become part
of the new Selected Reserve
force,
General Hill said virtually all
units of the 49th Infantry Division
in Northern California have been
affected tosome degree by the
move to form the separate “high
priority" brigade. He said that,
as announced in October, the
49th Infantry Division has been
reduced by 21 units which have
now been reorganized to form
three infantry battalions and their
combat and administrative support elements,
The 49th Division, minus the
Selected Reserve Force units,
will continue in existence, according to Hill.
In order to meet increased
manpower requirements, General
Hill said that trained men had
been transferred from nonSelected Reserve Force units to
SRF units within certain geographical areas,
Overall strength of the 49th
Infantry Brigade (SRF) will be
4,476, Brigade Commander is
Brigadier General Edwin A.
Simpson of Saratoga, Brigade
headquarters are at 251 West
Hedding Street, San Jose,
General Hill said the selected
units will increase their normal
training assemblies at home
stations from 48 a year to 72 and
will have priority for equipment
and maintenance, Additional
full-time technicians are being
added at the battalion level,
he said,
Objective of the intensified
training is to bring SRF units to a
combat readiness level.
