The friendly good cheer of the
holiday season prevailed at the
Rough and Ready Squares’
Christmas dance. —
Jack and Thelma Murtha
were guest callersfor 10 squares
of dancers. Other callers were
Ober and Monique Johnson and
Charles and Joyce Bear.
Visiting clubs represented were
Par Fours, Jeans and Queens,
Goldancers, Buttons and Bows,
Square Knots, Buzzing Cousins
and Tom and Country Squares.
Santa Claus made an appearance and handed out gifts to
retiring club officers and special
guests.
Paul and Ruth Blocher,
Clarence and Bea Treadway and
Len and Evelyn Valdez were in
charge of refreshments.

JANUARY: The Nevada City
Post Office moved from its longtime home on Commercial
Street to the brand-new brick
structure on Coyote Street.
Utilities were going
underground in Grass Valley in
preparation for the ‘‘new-face”’
planned for Mill Street.
The trial of Francis Dale
Calhoon, 72, accused of seconddegree murder in the death of —
his wife, Marian, in 1971, got .
underway.
Nevada City and Nevada
County Chambers of Commerce
were mulling over a plan to
jointly occupy the South Yuba
Canal Building when
director for the Nevada County
’ Community Workshop and was
replaced by Barbara Sailor as
“acting director.”
By mid-month the heavy
rainfall had brought season’s
total to 36.88 inches, compared .
to 17.53 the same time in
1972..in Grass Valley; the
totals for Nevada City were
recorded as 38.04 compared to
18.08 the previous year.
Nevada County’s ‘Mr.
Music’’, Harold J. George, Sr.
died suddenly. He was.the noted
director of the famous Grass
Valley Cornish Choir for many
*years.
Lyndon Baines Johnson, the
36th president of the United
States, died of a heart attack at
age 64, and Nevada Countyans
joined in the national mourning.
Francis Dale Calhoon was
found guilty of murdering his
wife, Marian, when the jury
returned its verdict on Jan. 26.
Secretary of Defense Melvin
R. Laird announced the end of
the military draft on Jan. 27, on
the heels of the declaration of
the end of the Vietnam War.

Daniel Breen, clarinet section
member of the NUHS band and
a senior at that school, was
selected from 800 applicants to
participate in the State Honor’
Band in Anaheim.
Harold Berliner resigned as
Nevada County district attorney
and was appointed to the post of
public defender by the County
Board of Sueprvisors. Ronald
MacMillen left his post as public
defender to serve as district
attorney in a related action by
the board.
MARCH: It took the Nevada
City Volunteer Fire
Department, and friends,
almost 13 months to raise the
$14,000 needed to purchase a
new ‘“‘Rescue’”’ vehicle, which
was delivered early in the
month. ;

Rider celebrated their Golden
Wedding Anniversary.

off a burglar alarm on the
premisés.
Mr. and Mrs. Edgar
Thompson celebrated their 62nd
wedding anniversary at a family
dinner in Grass Valley.
