Cold Weather
Nevada Irrigation District had
its troubles last week. Lowtemperatures and new snow addedto
these troubles as the Cascade
Ditch broke just below Mayflower
subdivision and most areas served by that canal were on low to
no water rations for two days.
Crews had been working for
two days previous to the rupture Dec, 18, to keep the canal
free of ice flows, but the con-,
tinued cold built up more of an
ice jam than the ditch could
take and it gave away.
The district put out an urgent call for laborers,
The Snow Mountain ditch was
closed, trying to avert more ice
jamming and Nevada City, Willow Valley and all other areas
served by Snow Mountain were
using reserves, All residents
were urged to conserve the supply.
By Wednesday afternoon the
state of emergency continued,
and residents of Grass Valley
and Nevada City were warned
that while they had water remaining in their emergency reservoirs they should not be waste“ful with theif supply.
On. Wednesday, the D-S Canal
was the only one of the three
main canals running normally.
This canal comes out of Scotts
Flat, at a lower elevation than
the Cascade Ditch and Snow
Mountain Ditch and those areas
fed by the D-S were not included
in the emergency. A trickle of
water was running in Cascade
Wednesday, the ditch having been
repaired late Tuesday.
In the western part of the
county, Penn Valley and Smartville areas, water was available as that supply came from
Deer Creek and the water supplies at lower elevations were
not in critical shape.
At the Nevada General Hospital, which is supplied by Snow.
Mountain Ditch, there was no
water until the 49er and Nevada
City Fire Departments joined
forces and hooked up a fire hose
to the nearest hydrant. Wednesday, a pumper truck remained
Curtails Water
at the scene to pump the water
supply to the facility.
Thursday, Snow Mountain
Ditch was put back into oper. ation and a small amount of water was coming from Cascade
Canal.
Stanley Wendt, manager of
maintenance and operation for
NID, said at that time that Cascade had been cleared of anchor .
ice and that the upper areas
had water. Banner Mountain water users also had a supply
Thursday, but the lower areas
such as Rattlesnake, Alta Sierra
and Cherry Creek Areas were
not expected to have their normal amount of water flow until
Friday.
Wendt reported that his emergency call for workers to help
clear the ditches brought an
immediate response,
Thursday, the Nevada General
Hospital was still using its emergency hook-up. Three agencies
‘finally went into action to get
the water to the institution, the
Nevada City Fire Department,
the 49er District and the State
Division of Forestry.
A Divison of Forestry man
and pumper were still at it
Wednesday afternoon, pumping
water through a canvas line
stretching more than 2,000 feet.
