The first baby born in Nevada County in the new year was pretty Yvonne Elizabeth Fickle. She arrived January 8 at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. Her overjoyed parents are Mr. and Mrs. Dave Fickle of Grass Valley. Al Butler and Larry Kennedy, county .road department employees, received their 20-year service pins during a January meeting of the County Board of Supervisors. A new teletype machine was installed at the County Library Project headquarters in Nevada City, to provide immediate communication for Nevada County patrons with cooperating libraries in the Mountain-Valley System Historic St. Columncilled’s Catholic Chruch, which once ' housed worshippers in Birchville, found a new home in North Bloomfield in the Malakoff Historic State Park. Clarence Otis Smith was sentenced to life in prison for the July 12, 1971 murder of Donna Fitzhugh at Bear River CamPground. Pacific Telephone Company announced that it expected to spend a total of $982,000 for construction and new equipment in Grass Valley this year. A fire causing an estimated $150,000 damage laid waste to the Hedman Furniture Company store on Auburn Street in Grass Valley. The murder trial of Alexandre Vichi started in Nevada County Superior Court. He was charged with the Nov. 7, 1971 shooting of his wife and four children at their Cherry Creek home. A National Certificate of Merit was presented to Cub Scout Loren Pingree for saving his baby brother’s life in a car fire. Loren was hospitalized for some time with second and _ third degree burns. His action was called a ‘‘marvelous feat’’ for an eight-year-old. 1 Moneyhun’s Holbrook Hotel in Grass Valley was honored by the California Heritage Council for being in business continuously for more
than 100 years. Alexandre Vichi was found guilty of murder in the first degree, in the shooting deaths of his wife and four children late last year. He was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Harold F. Wolters. Nevada County Supervisors accepted Boise Cascade’s offer of 78 acres for a recreational park in Penn Valley, plus $175,000 for development of the park project. Nevada County Supervisors voted in favor of keeping the 51year-old Weimar Medical Center in operation and of selling 350 acres of excess prime land to finance remodeling of an outpatient clinic. Esther Rebekah Lodge No. 9 of IOOF celebrated its 100th anniversary in Grass Valley. A federal aviation grant of $157,815 was approved for Nevada County Air Park. for general upgrading of its facilities. Ernest Pello was high vote getter in Nevada City’s council election. He joined John Rankin, who was re-named Mayor, and Peter Ray as the three new councilmen. The body of Victor Odie, 80, was found on the old Hennessy Pass Road near Alleghany. Odie, well known character in mining circles of Sierra County, had last been seen by friends in October of 1971, and was officially reported as missing in April of this year. It was not known when he died. John Darlington, 28, was named assistant district attorney for Nevada County, to succeed Ronald MacMillen who resigned to become Nevada County’s public defender. Mrs. Marian Ghidotti was named ‘‘Citizen of the Year’’ by the Nevada County Historical Society. Mauripat McGrath, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McGrath of Nevada City and Deepak Sachdev, son of Lieut. Col. A. R. (Ret.) and Mrs. Sachdev, were married in Hindu and Catholic ceremonies in Bangalore, India backward look at 1972 in April. Construction of the new.. shopping center, Glenbrook Plaza, midway between Grass Valley and Nevada City at Brunswick Road, got underway in June. Restoration plans for Grass Valley’s historic Holbrook Hotel were announced by Arletta Douglas, recent purchaser of the building which has been open to public patronage since 1851. Nevada County’s assessed valuation rose a_ spectacular $17.5 million, and would bring an additional $402,500 revenue to the county during 1972-73, according to Assessor Elton Tobiassen.
