Joe Houghteling Appointed Burns To Take Heller's Place On Highway Commission (Continued from Page 1) Heller, Nugget publisher, whoresigned from the highway group last week. In making the new appointment, the Governor said that as Park Commission chairman Houghteling “has proved his dedication to the preservation of California ‘s natural beauty. " Houghteling 's Park Commission experience, the Governor said, would be invaluable to the Highway Commission. In his letter accepting Heller's resignation, the Governor had said, “I want you to know I will try to find a successor whose philosophy coincides with yours. ” Heller said today he was very happy that Houghteling had been chosen as his successor. In his letter of resignation addressed to the Governor, Hellerwrote, "Because of other long-standing and prior commitments I find I cannot do the kind of conscientious and effective job I would like to do, My commitment to California Tomorrow seems in fact more important to me every day, perhaps in part because of my experience on the Highway Commission. The California Tomorrow program is being expanded, and I am also considering editing a new periodical which will address itself, I hope in a constructive way, to some of our growth problems, “ In reply, the Goveror. wrote to Heller, “I am accepting your resignation from the California Highway Commission with the deepest regret. Your fresh viewpoint, your concern overthe state's growth and your commitment to excellence in public serAuto Association Commends Board The California State Automobile Association has commended the State Motor Vehicle Pollution Control Board for its refusal to be stampeded into taking action at this time to require the installation of exhaust control devices on used cars. The Board has withheld action on such devices until its December 16 meeting because it has determined that the previous estimates of the cost of such devices have been unduly low. He is a member of the statewide advisory board of California Tomorrow, the conservation education organization of which Heller is president.
