More than a week of rain and snow have brought heavy damage to western Nevada County and surrounding areas. Nevada County joined the rest of the state in receiving unusually large amounts of rain for more than a week, In the Nevada City area 17.88 inches have fallen since Dec, 22. The complications caused by road washouts and mudslides were increased when it started snowing Sunday. As of Tuesday morning more than six inches of snow had fallen in the Twin Cities Area with the prospect of more to come, Almost all of the local creeks and streams ran over their banks last week, Deer Creek in Nevada City tore out the bank at the plaza and caused a portion of the downtown parking area to fall into the
water, The heavy flow of water gouged a huge hole near Nevada Street causing a-portion-of-the roadway to collapse. Hills Flat was full of water over the Grass Valle y-Nevada City Highway and Wolf Creek jumped the banks in several areas in Grass Valley. The heavy rains did extensive damage to the Nevada Irrigation District's water transmission system, The Cascade Ditch system which supplies water to the Banner andT aylor reservoirs and a large urban area around Grass Valley Hearings Are Set Up To Discuss Unification Plan Two hearings have been scheduled by the Nevada County Committee on School District Organization to give the public an opportunity to discuss the proposed’ unification of the schools in western Nevada County. The committee at its meeting of Dec. 8 voted to schedule the unification election for Feb. 16. At the same time it decided toset up at least two public hearings on the matter. The first public hearing is scheduled for 8 p.m. Jan. 16 in the Hennessy School auditorium in Grass Valley, The second hearing has been set for 8 p.m. Jan. 28 in the Nevada City Elementary School auditorium. was broken in several places and is still not back in service. The snow storm has complicated repair efforts, Pacific Gas & Electric Company's South Yuba Canal which supplies water to Scott's Flat Reservoir is also out of service, There is no danger of a water shortage because Scotts Flat is already storing more water than it ever had before. In the mountains the heavy rains have filled all of the NID's reservoirs including the new Faucherie. Jackson Meadows is being held to a state required minimum pool of 25,000 acre feet, The NID's new Rollins Reservoir on Bear River is already filled to its 65,000 acre feet capacity and is spilling. The gate was dropped over the diversion tunnel about two weeks ago and it was estimated that it would take two years tofill thé vast canyon reservoir in normal weather years, Pacific Telephone Company's system survived the rain and snow storm with only minor outtages, but the snow was making it! increasingly difficult for crews to get out and do repair work. The Pacific Gas & Electric Company Power system suffered only minor outtages from the rain storm, but severe damage started occurring over the weekend and early this week as the snow continued, Manager Larry Farrell reported Tuesday that powerwas out at the town of Washington and that the Pike City substation was out of service cutting out power to the Camptonville and Celestial Valley areas. Sunday night lightning punc~ tured an underground cable leading toNevada Union High School andcrews were still at work early in the week repairing the damage. As the very heavy snow continued to. fall it was anticipated that damage to power, water and. telephone facilities would increase, is es a . Tot AN EXPERIMENTAL concept in forest fire fighting is being developed locally through the joint efforts of the U.S, Forest Service, the California Division of Forestry and the State Division of Highways. The concept known as the shaded fuel break will be developed along Harmony Ridge on Highway 20 for a distance of about 12 miles, The project includes selective thinning and trimming of trees along a staggered strip on both sides of the highway and removel of ground fuel. The theory isthat by eliminating ground fuel, fires can be kept on the ground where they are more easily controlled. Added benefits to drivers along the road will be that more of the woods and wildlife will be visible without the usual clearThe Nugget will close and Jan. l. for the holidays Dec. 31 program are on Page 4, cut type of fire break normally used, This view of;one type of shaded fuel break was taken at a test plot on the access road to the Washington Ridge Youth Camp.
