Hardison, Sierra offers unique course A rather unique course -offering at Sierra College is enabling students to receive ~ both on-the-job experience in the area of social service and earn up to four units of credit per semester by volunteering their services to any of more than 80 social service organizations throughout Placer and Sacramento counties. Some of the volunteer positions have evolved into full-time positions. There are currently 75 students enrolled in the course. In spring there will be three ‘ more sections including a night class. Hours can be arranged to suit. the individuals’ class schedule. Vernon Grange, and. will have a one or two dollar gift exchange. gaye Placer Nevada Pomona will. meet at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 19 at the Golden Empire Grange Hall for a potluck and gift exchange. The Jan. .16 meeting will also be a 6:30 p.m. potluck and will be at Long Valley Grange Hall. State Grange Overseer and Sierra Nevada Grange Master Edwin Koster will donate two gavels to Placer Nevada Pomona Grange. South, or are you still expecting a glorious Indian Summer?” C. Anders Holman, a former deputy’ district attorney for Santa Clara county, has accepted the position of deputy for Nevada county. . Millen Tuesday told supervisors he had selected Holman because of the former Santa Clara county man’s extra. ordinary qualifications for the job. He said the new deputy has made “quite a record” for himself in ears. And that he has had experience in jury trials and other areas which will benefit this county. Because of the extra ordinary qualifications .MacMillen. asked supervisors _ to: consider upping the new em,Dloye’s salary. He said he un‘derstood that the board takes such qualifications into cdnsideration when setting. the starting pay for employes. MacMillen explained the new “ employe gave up a higher salary and opportunity. for. advancement in Santa Clara county because he wants to live here. He said he had ‘‘made. no promises’ but hoped for board . consideration of his request. » MacMilen wants to keep the eventually losing him. Supervisor Tom Turner pay. He claimed to be ‘‘fighting like hell” to get the new salary : survey in operation. MacMillen was told that within the next two months the board will study the survey which adjusts salaries _ upwards or downwards as in». dicated. The deputy district attorney, under the new scale, would get more money than = MacMillen requested. He was hired ata starting salary of $1,142 monthly. In other action supervisors set January 14 as the time for a public hearing on proposed changes of the Air Pollution Control District Rules and Regulations. ‘ A short public hearing was held Tuesday. However, because of certain recommendations for. changes on the rules .and: regulations, which have been circulated the new hearing was necessary. Nevada is among the nine counties which recently withdrew from the Sacramento Valley Air Basin to form a Mountain Counties Basin. Ron Earles, air pollution district: officer, hopes that: the county rules will be the same as the new district’s regulations. No testimony was heard at the hearing Tuesday. In other action the boarddenied a claim filed by Tahoe Forest Hospital for medical expenses of three indigent aliens illegally in the United States. The trio was treated in the hospital after being injured in an ~ accident on Highway Int. 80. They were riding in a stolen vehicle. County Counsel advised the county legally ‘‘can” pay for medical and ambulance expenses of prisoners, aliens and run-away minors, but that it is not mandatory: _-=County Counsel was in-. structed to proceed © with

Dedrick, Yvonne Von Gulker and Leon Marshall. County share of cigarette tax Distribution of more than $9 million has been given to counties and cities as the November apportionment of cigarette tax. Nevada county recieved $6,750.14; Grass Valley received $3,444.61, and Nevada City ‘got $1,363.47. The 58 counties’ share was $1,775,224 and the cities’ share totaled $7,295,111. This distribution represents 30. per cent of the revenue deposited in the cigarette tax fund during the month of October, 1974, less the _state’s administrative costs of $24,896.
