Scotch Broom small but friendly
Handiwork of
local persons
'Tis a warm and friendly
small ‘shop you'll be finding at
236 1/2 Commercial Street in
Nevada City. . . .where Barbara Regier, the attractive
young proprietor of the Scotch
Broon, displays wares catering
to a multitude of interests.
The canny shopper will find
an enticing selection among the
beautifully designed and, for the
mest-part, handcrafted items of
wearing apparel, costume accessories, jewelry, mobiles,
prints and painting, leather
goods and the like.
In fact, the handiwork of more
than 50 tocal persons is on consignment to the Scotch Broom
for sale; and more names are
being added to the roster of
contributing artists, craftsmen
and seamstresses from week
to week — as the shop grows
steadily in popular appeal.
In addition to garments by
local dressmakers, a fine line
of ready to Wear dresses from
a prominent San Francisco designer and maufacturer is
available. Clothing for the very
young set is also stocked, in
numerous cleverly detailed garments calculated to liven
up their wardrobes in a great
way — and inexpensively, too.
Outstanding patterns and exquisite stitchery are features
of the handmade quilts made
for sale by Barbara. . . .who
will also create quilts to individual orders, developing the
patron's. ideas in design on request.
Among other lines-unique to
this specialty shop. . . ."botique" is certainly the name
for it. . . .are hand knitted
or crocheted winter caps in a
rainbow of colors and combinations; sweaters, novelty belts,
jute bags in most imaginative
stylings, macrame, handmade
ties, leather belts with custommade buckles, hand-painted wall
plaques, and many, many other
stunning items for personal use
or gift giving.
Barbara, and her partner,
George Sward, came to Nevada
City from Fresno a year ago
last S-;tember. They opened

the Scotch Broom Botique in
June of 1971. . . ."in response
to an obvious need to sell items
that people of the community
create and make."
Her background in arts
‘and crafts stems, in part, for
some 15 years association with
a special program sponsored
by the YMCA in Fresno, She
also taught in the secondary
schools of Colorado and California; in the English and History departments, for five
years,
The botique is open five days
a week and is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Eours
are from 11 am. until 5 p.m
weekdays, and from 12 noon until 4 p.m. on Sundays.
Barbara's hours have been
slightly "irregular" of late due
to the inclement weather. She
"lives in the mountains" just
off Highway 20 near Central
House. . . .and walks in and
out of the property she owns
there, to transportation to and
from town. She hopes, naturally, that with the onset of summer, longer hours will be possible. . . .""better weather will
certainly remedy the situation,"she says,
At your earliest convenience,
a visit to the Scotch Broom will
be something you will not regret. Ask Barbara to introduce
you to her fine line of wares.
.and also to her beautiful
“Australian Shepherd, "Jennie."
And she'll tell you about her
handsome Siamese cat at home,
whose unusual name, "Biggy
Rat,"" comes from a pleasant
little tale you should ask about.
