GATHERING MOSS
Beauty And Mystery Of
Wild Geese In Flight _
By Joe Ruess
“A haze on the far horizon,
The infinite, tender sky,
The ripe rich tint of the cornfields,
And the wild geese sailing high--"
W.H. Carruth is not the only
. poet, or simple nature lover for
that matter, to be carried away
by the beauty and mystery of wild
geese in flight.
However biologists of the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service have
gone beyond wonder and awe and
have plotted wildfow1 migrations.
Through years of observation they
have learned where these birds
spend the winter and where they
nest andhatch their young. Using
this knowledge, they have set up
a network of refuges along the
traditional flyways and are protecting, through outright purchase
in many cases, thousands of acres
of nesting grounds in Canada.
W ithout this protection wild
ducks and geese might long since
have vanished fromthe American
scene.
Strangely enough, it is the
hunters of ducks and geese who,
through their purchase of duck
stamps, have financed this work,
an idea of the late cartoonist and
conservationist, "Ding" Darling.
Those who shoot the wildfowl
have made it possible for others
of us who now hunt only with a
camera to thrill to the sound of
distant honking and the sight of
winged Vs against the sky.
Some of those new to Our part
of the state are not aware that,
within easy driving distance,
there are governinent game refuges and other seasonally inundated areas where wildfowl by
the thousands are present during
the migratory seasons.
Sacramento Wildlife Refuge,
on U.S. 99W ‘between Williams
and Willows, has many ponds accessible by gravel road, with
places to stop and watch the
coming and going of ducks and
geese.
There is a state game refuge
along Highway 20 just east of
Williams, and another a few
miles north of Sutter Buttes.
One of our favorite areas for
watching wildfow] isnearer home.
Although unprotected, it has
yielded the most thrilling sights
and sounds of the great migration
that we have ever witnessed.
It is a shallow but extensive
body of water created primarily
by the discharge of floodwaters
from the Sacramento River into
SutterBypass. Although you cross
this “lake” onthe Knight's Landing Road, we prefer to approach

A Political Loner In ‘64

lose the war. They went big for Joe Shell. They appear to be going
big for Goldwater. I don't think the American people want the
ultra-conservatism of the handsome Senator from Arizona, And I
don't think he's going to get the nod for the nomination, He'll wind
up happy to settle for the VP second spot.
My choice would be governor Scranton of Pennsylvania. He has
done well with his state and could come into the race lacking the
blemishes of Goldwater, Nixon or Rockefeller. In Mr. Johnson the
Democrats have the shrewdest politician of all time. He is making
Roosevelt look like a Boy Scout. I think the Democratic VP nominee is going to be a member of the Kennedy clan. Either Sargent
Shriver or Bobbie Kennedy. Johnson can hardly ignore the current
emotional sympathy for the Kennedys, Johnson well knows that
without the Kennedys he wouldn't be where he is, and Kennedy
would never have been President without Johnson. The Saturday
Ev ening Post believes that there is only one man that can defeat
Johnson in this election, That is Johnson himself,
In the local race for State Senator I cannot see the knowledgeable voters of either. party not voting for Senator Paul Lunardi.
Lunardi has been tested in Sacramento and has proven himself to
be a real friend of all Nevada County, When the $65 million NID
bond project almost stumbled, it Was he, Paul Lunardi, with hours
and hours of hard work and political knowhow that caused enabling
legislation to be passed and this tremendous project to become a
job providing Nevada County reality. Also due to Lunardi there will
be recreational advantages near the lakes constructed for the benefit
of all. It was Paul Lunardi who stayed patiently with the Malakoff
State Park Project. It is now part of California's State Park master
plan. When this great Park becomes an actuality, it will mean a
minimum of 400,000 tourists a year through Nevada City and Grass
Valley.
As I said politics is the most fascinating game in the world, In
1964 1 am a political loner. °
