Private estimates of the damage range from $75,000 to above $150, 000. The fire savagely broke through Pine Street windows ofthe Elks Lodge Room only two hours after a post -charity Ball inspection of the premises by members of the club. Less than 15 minutes before the fire was discovered, a maintenance employee of the club passed the structure on his way to a special Sunday job. Heglanced upstairs and saw nothing to arouse suSpicion. The Nevada City Fire Deartment, aided by the 49er and Gold Flat volunteers, were able to confine fire damage to the second floor of the building. They drew commendation from officials for the job they did. The fire was discovered by a resident of Broad Street, whose dog barked and awoke her. She called the alarm from Chick's Service Station on Pine Street. up in the sheriff's office. A11 burglar alarms in the city simultaneously lit up, the fire bell coincidentally rang the call to firemen., and.all phones in a major part of Nevada City went dead. One fireman, Paul Falconi, was injured when he jumped from.a ladder to avoid the danger of falling bricks after part of the front wall fell tothe sidewalk. He was examined at Miner's Hospital, apparently with only minor injuries. ‘ Damage caused by the sca toe Ay quarters 6 aoe of the building, .
