Turns interest in watches into business Nevada City jewelry store Up in the Alps there's a part of Italy that was a part of Austria before the post-World War I "division of the spoils", It was in this beautiful section of the~Tyfolean Alps that Egidio Martin Dalpez was born and reared; and it was there that, as a small boy, he became fascinated with "what makes a watch tick'". Every time he could acquire any kind of watch or clock, he would take it to his room and dismantle it. .. .and then put it back together again. It was not, however, until quite some years later. . .and many miles away from his birthplace, . .that Mr. Dalpez found that he could put his interest
in watches and clocks to a very practical use. . . .in his jewelry store in Nevada City, at 310 Broad Street. There, he and his wife, Cisel_ la, have many beautiful watches and clocks for :sale; and "Dal" expertly repairs and services all makes and types of timepieces. Dal and Cisella first came to Nevada City in 1936 from Colorado — her native state. Dal worked in the Murchie Mine until the "big strike trouble" and they returned to Colorado in 1939, In 1942 they came back to California and settled down in Richmond. It was there that — on his own time — Dal began the serious study of watch repair.. . .and finally found himself with a good trade. In 1946 they returned to Nevada City and opened their jewelry store on Broad Street. Five years ago, in June, they became the local agents for an excellent cleaning service — Valet Cleaners of Grass Valley. This company offers free pickup and delivery service, has a complete alterations department, laundry service; and many satisfied patrons throughout Western Nevada county, who will vouch for the fine cleaning and other work that they do in knits and draperies, etc. Among the many beautiful items stocked in the store on Broad Street are stunning costume pieces in famous~ "Black EGIDIO LALPEZ and wife Cisella look over some new transistor watches they have recently stocked in their popular Nevada City store. Hills Gold" line of jewelry; diamonds in exquisite ring and other settings; handsome wall clocks which strike on the hour and half-hour, and need to be wound only once every thirty days; many, clever souvenir gift items and attractive watch bands in a variety of types and materials. Among the most popular lines of watches and clocks sold by Mr, and Mrs, .Dalpez are those manufactured by Elgin and Caravelle, which are stocked in transistorized, electronic, water and shock-proof models, Another service provided at Dalpez Jewelry is machine engraving. One may order baby cups and similar items for gifts, testimonials or identification purposes all fittingly engraved for the specific occasion or purpose, It isn't "all work and no play" for Dal and Cisella. . .when leisure time is available, and weather permits, they greatly enjoy fishing and boating. Dal is an accomplished accordian player, and has _ contributed much toe-tapping music: for the "Merrymakers Club", which meets once a month at Seaman's Lodge at Pioneer Park. Mr, and Mrs. Dalpez are the parents of two sons; Raymond, who works at SPD; and Julius, who is employed at the Mare Island Shipyards in Vallejo, Four grandchildren are a source of much pleasure to the couple also, The Dalpez store, and its respected proprietors have been very much a part of the Nevada City scene for more than 25 years; and there is no reason to believe that they will not remain here for many more pleasant and profitable years in the community which they serve so well, caused its ieietbitidin tne.
