BACON WE SELL ONLY LOCAL EGGS ed by Washington war bureaucrats to critics who demand an end to methods of procrastination, indecision and waste— methods that are forcing a lag in the nation’s preparation for the critical months just ahead. : *“When the Japs land in San Francisco, there will be a real shake-up,’ one’ elder statesman is quoted by Time Magazine. s ' Matters aren't going “pretty good” if that calamity is thought necessary to awaken the Government to full action! While our allies and our own field leaders cry for speed and more speed in streamlined, all-out war production, work is being rushed in the heart of the city of Washington ona $600,000 building to house the Office of Government Renortrc—a glorified clipping service center and information office where, as one wag puts it, “the visitor will go to find a men to te'l him where to find a man who can show the visito~ where to go.” : Construction on that building was beoun despite the refusal of Congress to authorize exnenditure for it. If that sort of muddling and waste of money and mater‘als is “pretty ~ood'’—then pretty good isn’t good enough. The peonle of America want full-time, full-speed action on the war. And they: want it now. VICTORY FOR CENTRAL VALLEY Cheering news for California farmers—and_ reassuring to the nublic at large —was the announcement which came from Washinaton a few days ago that the House Appropriations Committee had slashed requests for funds co develop power phases of the Central Valley Water Project and increas” ed the amounts to be spent on canals, conduits and other vital water units of the big project. The primary purpose of the Central Valley Project, before boondogeling power politicians sought to emasculate it, was the control and storage of winter flood waters to insure an adequate water sunply for the Central Valley agricultural empire during the arid months of summer. By its action in slashing appronriations for nower installations. and in restoring apnropriations for.canals and condvits the Honse Com—~ittee kent faith with the neonle af California wha cancejved the rroiect and made its construction possible. even thouch thev seem.to have offended the little coterie af aoerer noliticians who have come to consider the proiect as their ov7n nvivate ‘pork barrel.” t Now. at least. California mav eccane the chameful travestv of bringing the great dams of the vroiect to comnletian without carals or condrits to take the woter ta the land for the committee increaced the apnropriation for the Contra Costa canal by $800 000 -nd allocated $1,009 000 for exca‘vetion work on the Friant-Kern Canal. That. of course. is iust a besinning. but it is reasenrine. at any rate. to know that there are some men in Washington who are determined to see that the oriciral and mrimarv nurnose of the nroiect shall not temporarily. in their raids on Central Vallevs funds.
