~ Conduct Installation
The 118th annual installation
_of officers for Nevada Lodge
No, 13 Free and Accepted Order
of Masons was held in the Nevada City Masonic Temple at
110 North Pine Street, Saturday, Jan. 13, A dinner, served
by the members of Evangeline
Chapter No. .9 Order of Eastern
Star, preceded the installation
ceremonies,
Thomas H. "Ty" Taylor was
installed as master, succeeding
Bill Lambert, who had held the
office the past two years. Ty
held the office once before, in
1953.
Ty graduated from Yale Uni-versity as. a mining engineer,
with a minor in accounting. He
came to Nevada City 22 years
ago to follow his profession of
mining engineer, but when the
mining slowed down, he became
a certified public accountant and
how has accoun > pene in
both Nevada City Tass Valley. He has been : mmunity
leader for many years, serving
on the Nevada City Council from
1948 to-1956, and was mayor
from 1950-through 1954. He is
also a lay reader at Trinity
Episcopal Church,
The other officers elected and
appointed for 1968 are: Demar
Dundas, P.M., senior warden;
Bruce McDaniel, junior warden;
William A, Boodt Sr., treasurer;
J. Howard Keene P.M., secretary; Fred A, Emery, chaplain;
Eugene Walter, senior deacon;

The trustees of the lodge are

The installing officer was Ed
Farley, inspector of the 208th
Masonic District, J. B. Chris» tensen was master of ceremonies, and Jack Siegfried was in‘stalling chaplain,
Nevada Lodge is the sixth
oldest lodge in the state, having
_been chartered originally by the
Grand Masonic Lodge of Wisconsin, before the Grand Lodge
of California was organized. For
a time during the gold rush days
it was the largest Masonic Lodge
in California.
The Nevada City Masonic
Temple was erected 104 years
ago, in 1864. The antique furnishings are the envy of all
antique dealers in this area, as
they came “around The Horn"
when the temple was built.
Steer Rustling
Charges Filed
Against Pair
Two men have been charged
with steer rustling in Nevada
County. Sheriff's deputies have
arrested Dearl Dwayne Brown,
32, of Weimar and Wayne Frank
Doyle, 27 of Applegate.
The arrests followed a report
made by Frank Retherford,
ranch owner,
Undersheriff Frank Gallino
said investigation revealed a half
of a steer in a deep freeze in
Doyle's home and a discarded
steer's head nearby.
Bail has been set at $3,750
for each.

Court Convicts Miner
Of Water Pollution
In a court trial held in Nevada
City, a judge held a mine operator responsible for polluting
the Middle Yuba River, the Department of Fish and Game reports.
Justice Court Judge Verle R.
Gray of the Nevada City Judicial
District fined Norman Lee Van
Valkenberg of Sacramento, operator and part owner of a placer gold mine north of Nevada
City, $500 but suspended $150
on the condition that he prevent
any further pollution of the river.
Wildlife protection personnel
and water quality biologists of
the Department of Fish andGame
presented evidence that the trout
population and fish food organisms in the river had been
damaged by pollution from the
mine, Fish and Game Warden
Jack Witwer testified that the
mine operator had been asked
last fall to take precautions to
prevent pollution.
_A U.S, Forest Service officer testified that the stream was
muddy from mine operations
seven miles below the mine.
The trial was held Dec, 28,
