The first meeting of the year of
the Nevada City Garden Club was
most interesting and enjoyable
when President Mary*Moser nartated and showed slides of her
recent trip through Europe, The
meeting was held last Thursday,
inthe home of Christine Guddal,
211 Ridge Estates, Nevada City.
Ruby Jewell, Ruth Hildebrand
and Lilly Poaches were welcomed
as guests. Mrs. Poaches is a sister of Mrs. Mosher and will soon
be returning to her home in
Nebraska,

The bride is the daughter of
Mr, and Mrs. J. Arlon Simmons,
117 Conaway Avenue, Grass
Valley. Mr. and Mrs, Frank
Flagg of Chicago, [linois, are
the parents of the groom.
A white brocaded knit suit was
chosen by the bride for her wedding attire.~She carried a bouquet
of red roses,

was the bride’s only. attendant.

BELOVED SENIOR CITIZEN
On January 6, 1869, Mrs. Carrie
Heilman was born in the state of
Missouri. At the age of five,
accompanied by her parents, she
began her travels by covered
wagon westward to Monte Vista,
Colorado, Even at that tender
age, the memories of that trip
are still with her,
Mrs. Heilman, or “Mother
Heilman" as she is known by her
many friends today, recalls how
their wagon train was led, in
spite of the Indians and the many
travel hazzards of that day, bya
skilled wagon master, with but
one encounter with danger,
She recalls 13 wagons in the
train turning back because of the
warnings they received along the
route, At still another point,
the train left the trail for a distance of thirty-five miles to
avoid the massacring and pill‘aging that was waiting on the
trail ahead,
Mother Heilman has made her
home with -her daughter-in-law,”

her daughters visiting here each

When asked ‘her formula for
lofigevity, Mother Heilman recommended keeping active not
only physically, but spiritually
and mentally, and to have a
daughter-in-law such as she has
to love and care for you. ie

she received many greetings and
gifts from the many friends who
hold her in high esteem and.love
