THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT, NEVADA CITY, CAL., WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 12, 1887. at ramento, San roughout the State Diego, from the Siag OFFICE: a ie beams: street, Nevada City, Cal. —_—_—_—_—_—— io “& VOICE FROM TRUCKEE. The Truckee Republican comes out earnestly in favor of that portion of California lying east of the Sierra Nev being severed from its present State connections and annexed to NevIt says:. ‘Weare not identified y great extent with the interests _ of California. Our resources are not in the soil ; we produce neither fruit or grain. We cannot make oranges grow on pine trees or produce wine from manzanita berries. We are not even identified with the rest of the county to Be axe poculialy ourown and so different from the rest of the State, and. so small when compared with the remaining portion, that we are seareely recognized and the State * at large is not even conscious of our existence. The advantages of belong. ing to Nevada are many. Our interWig <2 ests would’ be more nearly identical : with the balance of the State. We would exercise a larger proportional influence in the government of the ‘Stateand laws could be formed to better promote the prosperity of the State. ~ Out of the annexed territory a new L _ county could be made and our people taht + iit would not be compelled to submit to the vexation and expense of traveling é from fifty to a hundred miles to go the -eounty seat. Our money paid in taxes would be kept at home. There are -other advantages which wehave. not the space to enumerate. We firmly believe that the people of the district affected by the change would favor it asaunit.” It is not at all likely that Truckee'will leave us—not for some time to come, at any rate. California _ and Nevada county could not spare her, and the State of Nevada does not appear to hanker for her. She is get_ ting along well where she is. We have after a long and at times trying experi‘ence become used to her eccentricities, -and she has to ours. We know just how many prisoners she will send to the county jail every year, how many and how big bills her justices and constables will get in during a quarter, how largean army of candidates for office will come down to a given political convention, and so on. The Truckeeites have become , accustomed to being b blamed for many things and ~~ grown calloused to adverse erlictana from this direction. It has taken many years to get these things adjusted and in good working order. There would be an aching void in Nevada. county with Truckee gone, and Truckee would never get used to any other gov‘erment for the same reason that an ‘old dog cannot be taught ‘new tricks. If a new branch jail or anything of that . . kind will prove a balm for our way' ward sister’s discontent, let the Supervisors attend to the matter. . Coryetivs Vanpersitr has earned the gratitude of the army of New York ~ Central Railroad employees by the announcement that there will be means shortly to erect a stately structure opposite the Grand Central depot in (Forty-second street, New York City, for their use, the various apartments of which will be provided with libraries, reading rooms, baths, gym-. nasiums, lecture-rooms, and in fact, ~~ everything that could be desired for entertainment, innocent amusement, education, and the nurture of Chrisae tian principles. ‘Tus New York Catholic Times says George’s political career is LEE Vigorous and Enterprising. ‘ed es [Recramento Record-Union.]} The New Year’s or holiday issue of the Nevada City Damy Transcrirt was a valuable paper, containing much nseful information calculated to enlighten strangers concerning Calitornia.
