Sole to scan because annudily they have columns of praise written about them. But ott you iknow that there are Alleq awards in other fields, 4 a camellia, two gladius, three chrysanthemums, a nandful of annuals an da turnip ‘were also accorded All-America honors for 1960? The camellia is Sparkling Burgundy, a ruby colored gem of a camellia that knocked them dead in proving grounds from coast to coast. It is a Sansanqua variety n therefore an early bloomer. If you missed it last fall it’s likely you'll have to wait until next to see its color. But don’t wait to plant it. California Association of : Nurserymen. members have plants. in stock now, The two new glads are Landmark, a full-flowered, creamcolored number with lovely ruf“aA _betals; and Little Pansy, a -cpiked gladiolus with light florets which deepen to , blue toward their centers. The All?American mums_ are sure to be sell-outs when they arrive in nurseries late this year. Headliner is a large, decorative mum of bronze-to-coral shadings. Mardi Gras is a large doublecactus type with reddish-orange and gold coloring. Pink Cherub is a compact little pompon with purplish-pink hues. Biggest news among; annuals is the introduction of -the new Rocket Series Snapdragons. The Rockets were developed to thrive in the hottest days of summer when many another snap falls‘ by the way. The entire series won AA honors. Also honored was another snap called Vanguard —a double rose pink with golden throat. Other annuals in the AA ranks include two Marigolds—Toreador and Spun Gold. Toreador is a tall-growing, large-flowered orange, while Spun Gold tis small of stature, but large of bloom—. ‘an intriguing mound of golden yellow flowers: that is sure to catch the eye. The turnip, if you are vegetable: minded, is Just Right. And that it is for all home vegetable gardens." 3 New Year Résolutions For Gardeners If you are making New Year resolutions this week, how about adding a few that deal with gardening Or doyour gardening habits stand above reproach? We know ours. don’t. i We know, for instance, as the California Association of Nurserymen recently suggested, that we hang onto shrubs that have outlived their usefulness simply beeause we can’t bear to tear them out. We therefore resolve to uproot the two roses we’re not wild about anyway and to replace them with two new 1960 introductions. Now ,check these other resolutions and see if any apply to you. And while you are at it, add some more of your own. Resolved: That I will plan ahead this year to have the color combinations I want when I want them. (Particularly will I plant white stock and pink snapdragons in the same bed.) That I will harden my heart and uproot the overgrown foundation planting on the street side of my house . (To be replaced with lower and slower growing material such as dwarf juniper and India hawthorne.) _ That I will give my roses the attention they deserve so that I may ‘enjoy. them from spring through fall. (No bush shall flag for lack of water: nor suffer for want of food. Aphis shall not get GOING PLACES? . Dos’ forget your’ ° # Besa or Pleure Tepe will be suggested.) These are only some of our resolutions, There are others to do with lawn and hedge—and what have you. Some, we know, will be broken, but that’s all right, too. If they don’t all get don this year, we'll resolve to jo them next—and, sooner or later, we'll get them done for sure, Aerial Spraying Hits Poison Oak . A three year spraying program may solve most of the blue oak problems on California rangelands, Experimenting with aircraft spraying of phenoxy herbicides on the John Allen ranch in Amador County, University of California researchers killed, blue oak most effectively with the ester of 2,4,5-TP. Davis botanist O. A. Lee and.C. E. Carlson of the division of forestry achieved the best results by spraying in May of the first year, in June of the second year, and in May of the third year, With this spraying schedule, the 2,4,5-TP killed 90 per cent of the blue oak. and most of the poison oak, they reported. Because of the promise shown by 2,4,5-TP, further testing is planned with the herbicide. The young treés are on rootstocks other than the Oriental varieties, in which the highest percentage of collapse or de-eline has appeared: About 95 growers attended the first of two annual pear meetings slated in the Delta area.
