A Pent-up Fire in the California Mine.
Dan De Quille contributes the following from Virginia City to the Salt
Lake Tribune:
A matter which should be of some
interest has recently been brought to
light here. This is the fact that fire
has been found smouldering on the
sixteen hundred: level of the California mine, that has endured ever
since a fire broke out in that mine
seven years ago. At that time the
part of the mine in which the fire occurred was sealed up by the means of
bulkheads. A drift now shows that
the fire is still alive. ‘The old timbers
have been slowly charring, and in
places where covered with a great
weight of rocks and earth they have
been converted into what presents the
appearance of a fair article of bitumining about Portland, Oregon, for some .
disease superinduced excessive
drinking.
Captain Burke, of the Atlanta Gate
City Guard, says he will take his company through Europe, despite England’s refusal to let them exhibit in
that country.
A conjecture has been made that
Prof. B. Schaff, who took morphine in
jail at Cincinnati, Monday, and died,
was the bomb-thrower at the Chicago
Haymarket riot.
Mrs. Osbourne (formerly Mrs. Norton Bush), the wife of a prominent actor, is missing from San Francisco, as
also is Della Sager, wife of John Sherman, the-illusionist.
The charge that Judge Ross entered
the Confederate army from a Northern
State has been satisfactorily explained.
He was a cadet in a military academy
in Virginia and was drafted.
A cold wave visited several parts of
the State in the last few days, but no
by
time past, died on fiatunday of heart . to sell goods of the same quality much lower than others

ous coal. This seems te be on account . dan from frost is reported, except1
of pitch in the wood. Some years ago ing ~" Riverside, Los Angeles . at the very lowest rates:
county, where the orange.crop is hurt, there-was brought to this city a piece
of pitch pine taken from an ordinary
coal pit, one end of which appeared to
be genuine bituminous coal. This had
been formed where there was no-great
. amount of pressure upon it. When so
small an amount of fire as in the California mine is found to endure: for}
seven years, should we be incredulous
on being assured by men of science
that the center of the earth, once a
molten mass of rock, still remains in a
molten state after untold ages? How
many years the small bunch of fire in
the California will still remain alive it
is impossible to say. The secret of its
long life appears to be that it is sosecurely inclosed that loss of heat is prevented. In this may be found a hint
for the manufacture of heating apparatus. ‘The fire isin an abandoned part
of the mine where it can do no harm,,}. ge it is hermetically sealed in~all directions. The drift that cut into it has
been securely closed, and it will prob‘ably be allowed to smolder on for
another term of years.
Tue Senatorial caucus of the Democratic Legislators at Sacramento Tuesday evening did not result in anything
definite being accomplished, and an
adjournment was had till tonight.

total destruction of the building. The

One\of the great nuisances that pedestrians have to encounter in«Sat’Francisco, and one that is assuming
large proportions, is the gang of beggars that infest the principal thoroughfares from early.in the afternoon till

A dynamite factory at Pl: sttaburgh,

windows were rattled as if by a heavy
earthquake, and many hundred people
ran into the street.
Dr. Wm. Perry, the oldest person in
