July 22, 1965..Nevada County Nugget
An anonymous donation of
$2,500 and many smaller contributions has given the Liberal
Arts Commission of Nevada City
a,strong push toward realization of
a dream that the Century old
Nevada Theater could be revitalized again to serve the
community.
Built in 1865, the theater now
known as the®Cedar Theater,
could emerge as a handsome,
dignified structure of which the
community could be proud.
The idea of revitalizing the old
building into a needed multipurpose theater took real direction when the Liberal Arts
Commission was formed about a
year ago.
The main objective of the group
was to secure a theater for the
area, A secondary aimwas to
foster educational, cultural and
other entertain ment activities-for
the community.
The idea of a theater here has
been tied in with the expressed
interest of officials at the Davis
campus of the University of
California in establishing a summer theater program here for the
campus drama department. The
idea of using the theater for
university extension courses was
also advanced.
Work Of Liberal Arts Commission
The thing holding up the project
was the lack of housing. This
lack of a theater sparked the
Liberal Arts Commission formation here.
Since its start, the Liberal Arts
Commission had conducted four
fundraising ventures. In its most
ambitions project, final preparations and rehersals are underway
for the gala celebration of the
100th birthday of the Nevada
Theater.
The commission has enlisted
expert community help in negotiating forthetheater and purchase
isnow feasible according to
‘commission spokesmen. To
make this a reality, the support
of the community is needed
especially in funding the project.
Widespread interest has been
expressed about how to make a
contribution tothis project. The
Liberal Arts Commission isa nonprofit corporation and subscribing
members contribute $10 to $50;
contributing members $50 to
$100; donors $100 to $500 and
patrons $500.or more. General
members pay annual dues of $1.
Residents wishing to contribute
to the work of the commission
may call president Mrs, Isabel
Hefelfinger at 265-2979 or
treasurer Mrs. Mary Cox at
265 -4806.
