Many Scholarships
Go To Peace
Corps Volunteers
Peace Corps Volunteers applying forscholarships from
American colleges and universities after two years overseas
receive an average of nearly five
responses each,
Dr. Robert Calver, Jr., director of the Peace Corps’ Career
Information Service, announced
2, 800 responses from educational
institutions torequests of 600.
Volunteers for financial assistance in 1965-66,
Over half of the 3,500 Volunteers who have returned for two
year assignments overseas are enrolled in school, according to Dr,
Calvert.
"Because of the unpaid service
nature of their Peace Corps commitment, many of these former
Volunteers need scholarships,
fellowships or assistantships to
continue their education, " he
said. :
Dr. Calvert attributes the
Volunteer's interest in graduate
studies toa formulation of career
goals during Peace Corps service.
Atthetime they joined the Peace
Corps, 34.4 per cent of the
Volunteers were unclear or had no
career goal. Now, according to
questionnaires submitted by
2,300 returned Volunteers, only
12.2 percent are still uncertain -and many of these have general
plans toward which they are
taking graduate training,
