A little snow fell now and then at intervals during the forenoon, but the
temperature was moderate and at this
city the snow melted soon after touching the ground. In the afternoon the
sun occasionally peeped from behind
the clouds, bur did not stay out long

How Captain Johnson “and Hie Brave
Crew Went to a Watery Grave.
There recently appeared in .theTranscripr a brief article referring to
a report that the ship Alfred Watts,
commanded by Captain F. H. Johnson, brother to Manager Johnson of
the, Great American Tea Store at this
city,‘had been lost with all on board.
Captain Johnson visited Nevada City
last summer, and made many acquaintances ‘while here. Hence the;
-Courier-Gazette of Dec. 27th, will_be-of
interest to numerous local readers:
Information was received Thursday
atthe Maritime Exchange in Philadelphia which proves beyond doubt
Pret the ship Alfred Watts, which
sailed.for Hiogo, Japan, Oct. 8, from
that port, has gone down with 28 men,
two of the crew having been rescued.
Last Monday week a cablegram was
received from Cuba announcing the
loss of the Alfred Watts, but it. was
mi and in no way ‘substantiated. None of the seamen of Philadelphia placed any credit in the cablegram, ani neither did Willian H.
ord of that city whose only son
was a passenger on board. The information received Thursday came in
the shape of g letter from United
States Cousnl Heed at Barbadose, one
of the group of islands known as the
Lesser Antilles, a few hundred miles
southeast from the West Indies. The
letter is.dated Dec. 15,.and_tells of the
rescue of two of-the-crew of the ship.
It reads as follows:
‘Captain 8. Young of the British
bark Lizzie rag Bey peer that on Oct.
20, when in lat. 28 910 min., long. 53°
20 min., he picked up two > men givin
their names as H Magnus aad
Osca Link, the_only surviving members of the crew ol the ship Alfred
Watts, which sailed from Philadelphia
Oct. 8, for Hiogo, with a crew of 28
men and 800,000 gallons of petroleum.
The men say the vessel was capsized
during a terrible hurricane, after being dismasted and waterlogged, when
but a few days out of port.”’
This letter caused much excitement
along the wha-ves. Never since the
existence of tle Maritime Exchange
has there been so many — lost.in a
vessel sailing from that poi
When the ship Alfred PWatt sailed
down;the Delaware in tug of the George
W. Pride, Jr., early on the morning of
Oct. 8, she was in charge of Captain . F. H. ‘Johnson, master, with John R.
Kay as first mate and Edward™ Clark
as second mate.
Later advices state that the bark
which rescued sailors Magens and
Link-was subsequently wrecked, and
both these men drowned.
A Bogus Gold Nugget.
A short time since two men went to
the restaurant of Ed Settles on Pine
street and according to.his statement
paid him for meals with an imitation
of a gold nugget which he found on investigation to he nothing but a chunk
-of brass. They represented it as being worth two or three thmes the
amount of their bill, and told him to
hold it a few days subject to redemption by them. It is needless to say
. they . have not yet come around to take
Tit out of pawn. Settles upon discovering the fraud lodged a complaint
against them in Justice _Wadsworth’s
court. One of them, who remained
in town, is now under arrest but it is
part in the swindle. . Constable Dillon
yesterday started after George Rose,
the principal, who is saidto be working eight or ten miles from Dutch Flat.
. Rose was formerly employed by the
South Yuba Company as a ditch tender, He has been in the habit of
occasionally coming to this-city and
indulging in protracted sprees. The
law under which this action is bronght
makes it a felony to pass bogus gold
bars of nuggets.
Grand Officere Coming.
It is expected that when the officers
of Nevada City. Council, Order of
Chosen Friends, are installed Monday
evening, A. B. Sanbourn, Grand Counselor, and Mrs, Annie Evans, Grand
Recorder, will be here to assist in the
ceremony. Mrs. Evans resides in
San Francisco. Mr. Sanbourn is pro»
prietor of the Sentinel, a weekly paper published at Jackson, Amador
county. After the installation, which
will be private and will conclude at
(about nine o’clock, the hall will be
thrown open and a collation of which
a limited number of guests have been
invited to partake, will be served.

The San Juan ‘Times of yesterday
says: John Downey has located a
quartz claim at the junetion of the
Middle and North Yuba rivers, on the
‘Yuba county side, which is thirty feet

Almost every piece taken from the
ledge shows free gold. It is the continuation of the lode located by Geo.
