N. Calif. Fuel Break
Experiment Plans Drawn
SACRAMENTO---Senator
Ronald G. Cameron, Auburn, announced that preliminary plans have been
drawn up and field planning
started by the California Division of Forestry to comply
with the request of the legislature in carrying out the
proposals of Senate Concurrent Resolution 25 (Cameron)
1961 Regular Session, relative
to forest fires in California.
The Resolution specifies
that there be initiated an experimental and demonstrational project in a forested
area of Northern California
similar to the “fuel break"
projects now being conducted in Southern California by the Division of Forestry in cooperation with
other State, County, and
Federal agencies. These’
projects involve removal of
combustible fuels from wide
"fuel breaks" so that the
natural vegetation is blocked
out in relatively small units. It isnecessary that immediate steps be taken to reduce
the potential for catastrophic
fires in the wildlands of
California by means of barriers such as fuel breaks and
through general hazard reduction, Cameron said.
The California Division of
Forestry is in the process of
setting up an experimental
pilot project in Placer
County and hope to begin
actual work by July 1. The
work program will be directed toward blocking out
the area through a system of
strategically located fuel
breaks. These breaks will,
insofar as possible, be motorized to permit access for
men and equipment in order
that a stand can be made in
the front of conflagration .

completion date. We now
anticipate completing the
investigation in June of 1962,”
The finalreport will contain
conclusions and re¢ommendations.
The report, dealing with
a comprehensive basin-wide
study covering portions of
Nevada, Placer, Sierra, Sutter, and Yuba Counties, was
specifically authorized by
the Legislature in the Budget
Act of 1957,
"We are submitting the
progress report to the Legislature and to other interested
parties at this time to inform
all concerned of the progress
made to date," Warne said
"Also, we feel that the report and available background material will provide
