4 The Nevada County Nugget Wednesday, March 1,
Chicago Park News:
By PAT JONES
When residents of Buena Vista Subdivision applied for a post
office in 1916, they were advised
that the name was already taken,
They had to choose another.
Thus, Peardale Post office was
established on May 11, 1916
with Samuel V. Koeller as postmaster,
The records of the Post Office Department. in the National
Archives show that a post office
was established at Buena Vista
in Amador County on April 24,
1855. However, it was discontinued in 1878.
There is no record of the Buena Vista that existed in 1916
and aced the Nevada county community out of its preferred name.
"Buena Vista" was popular
with vets returning from the
Mexican War. General Santa Ana
had been defeated by U. S. forces
directed by Zachary Taylor at
Buena Vista, Mexico in 1847,
The battle ended the northern
campaign.
Besides, it was alovely name,
meaning "beautiful view" in
Spanish. Shortly after the war
ended, 19 Buena Vistas appeared
on U, S. maps.
Benjamin Taylor came to this
area with other Mexican War
Veterans in 1849, Ee named his
ranch in the present Peardale
area Buena Vista. The ranch
was part of the original Buena
Vista subdivision.
The Peardale post office was
opened in a corner near the
front door of Peardale Hall.
Circa 1918 it was moved. to
Buena Vista Station on the Nevada County Narrow Gauge. The
station was located below You
Bet Road at its intersection with
Colfax Highway.
On January 14, 1927 the post
office was discontinued. Peardale voting precincts retain the

On the subject of place names,
Cedar Ridge was once called
Kress' Summit for George Kress
a resident of the area. Various
old maps list it as Cedar Crest,

Student to get
German trip
AUBURN -A student from
Placer or Nevada County will
spend six weeks in West
Germany this summer as a
Young Ambassador in Volkswagen's Youth Exchange program.
The 11th annual exchange will
enable 40 American and 40 German teenagers to trade families, homes and friends for the
summer in order to develop
greater internationa! wunderstanding through international
living.
The local sponsor is Laurie
Felton, president of Placer
Volkswagen on Highway 49 at
Bell Road.
Colfax, Del Oro, Placer and
Nevada Union High Schools will
select one finalist each cn the
basis of scholarship, school and
community activities and general interests. A committee of
civic leaders from the two counties will review each student's
records and conduct interviews
before naming the Youth
Exchange winner, in April.
The German exchange student
will arrive in California, July
11 and will spend several days
with his or her exchange
"brother" or "sister" before
the local winner goes to Germany, The students will have
a week together in Germany at
the end of the summer.
"I am pleased to sponsor this
program for two reasons,"
states VW dealer Felton. "It
rewards an outstanding local
student with an excellent living
and learning experience in Germany and it gives the local
student's family and our community the chance of ‘adopting’
a foreign student for the
summer."'
The Volkswagen Youth Exchange program was started in
1962 because of the auto company's belief that the world's
major companies should exchange more than ucts with
foreign lands, "Our Peetle has
carried people across strange
borders and into new experiences and this program will
enable a local Young Ambassador to do the same thing,"
Felton concluded.

Department of Parks
and Recreation
‘SACRAMENTO Looking for a new experience? Try winter
camping! :
The State Department of Parks and Recreation is keeping 75
campsites open at Sugar Pine Point Park in E] Dorado County
this winter, and says that even if you've never tried cold weather
camping before, don't let that stop you.
Each campsite has a paved parking space and a table and
stove, and heated restrooms with hot water nearby. There are
no showers, however. Bring plenty of warm clothes and don't
forget firewood -= it is sometimes in short supply at the park,
As for activities, there is lots to do, including just enjoying
the scenery, seeing the many attractions in the Lake Tahoe
area, or visiting the Monument and Museum at Donner Memorial
near Truckee, the site of the Donner tragedy during the winter
of 1846-47,
For the more hardy souls, Park Ranger Ken Legg leads a
cross-country hike from the park each Saturday at 10 a.m.
Snowshoes or cross-country skis are required, and the hikes
usually last about-four hours,
The park is easy to get to. It's on State Highway 89, just
south of Tahoma. Parking spaces and roadways are kept clear
of snow.
State Park Rangers will be on hand to advise or help you,
if necessary, so get your camper, trailer, or tent out, dust it
off, and try it ... you'll like it.

New tidepool regulations in units »f the State Park System
will go into effect March 1, the State Department of Parks and
Recreation reported today.

’ Fish and Game Commission and can be found in Section 51
of the California Sportfishing regulations.
The new rules apply to the area between: the high tide mark
and 1,000 feet beyond the low tide mark in state parks, state
beaches, state recreation areas, state underwater parks, and
state reserves, as well as national parks, national monuments,
or national seashores,

SACRAMENTO Visitors who bring their dogs into units of
the State Park System are reminded that effective February 21,
each animal must havea current license or proof of a valid rabies
innoculation,
State Farks Director William Penn Mott, Jr. explained that
the new regulation was adopted by the State Park and Recreation
Commission last month, and is designed to protect the health
and safety of.park visitors.
"Although we have regulations requiring people to keep their
pets under strict control, there are some who ignore them,"
Mott said. "Before, if a loose, unlicensed dog bit someone and
we couldn't find the owner, the person bitten wouldn't know if the
animal had rabies or not.
"Now, if the animal is licensed, we will know it doesn't
have rabies, The same applies if the dog's owner has a rabies
innoculation certificate," he added.
