peo and 7,444,000 were catchables. Total weight was 1,852,336
pounds, some 265,200 pounds under the previous year’s production.
The bill for this production
tame to $1,460,065, or $68,492 less
than the operating costs in 195758. The savings were made possible because of a smaller poundage production and because of
the increased use of dry food in
hatcheries.
Total cost of catchable-size
trout rearing and planting was
$1,141,966. Shannon pointed out
this is in line with previous Fish
and Game Commission policy to
hold production to the 1956 cost
level, which was $1,248,092.

Turkish Chukars
To Be Released
The last of 2,000 Turkish chuKars to be planted in California
«experimentally this year were released in Siskiyou County yesterday (March 9).
: The California Department of
Fish and Game, which is releasing these birds under authority
of the California Fish and Game
Commission, hopes they will establish themselves iri areas now
deficient in game birds.
The Turkish chukar, a close
relative. to the. Indian chukar,
which was first released. in Cali‘fornia in 1932, favors steep; rough
terrain, with low, scattered shrub
cover. It is believed. to favor areas
of higher -rainfall. and © denser
stands. of brash and’ woodland
than its ~presently ‘established
cousin, the Indian chukar. Both
birds are in. the same family.as
the Barbary partridge, which was
introduced experimentally © into
the Sierra foothills of eastern San
Joaquin VaHey in.1958, 1959, and
1960. ;
The introduction of Turkish
chukars is the second plant of
1,000 birds and is being made in
the same areas where survivors
of the first plant (in early January) have been located. Plants
were scheduled to be made at the
following locations:
Orradre Ranch, San Ardo, Monterey County, 200 birds March 1,
Kennedy Table, Madera County, 200 birds March 2.
Little Rock Canyon, Los :Angeles County, 200 on Mareh 3.
San Mateo Canyon, Camp*Pendieton, San Diego County, 200 on
March 3.
Clement Bros. Ranch, Montague, Siskiyou County, 400 on
March 9.
Once established, the ._ progeny
of these plants will serve as a
nucleus of wild stock from which
the department plans to trap and
transplant to other suitable areas.
All of the present birds were

Only $3. 00 Per Year
' Sportsmen who took a near‘record humber of bucks last year
‘of Fish and Game that plenty of
them survived the,fall hunting
seasons.
The department announced that
food fawn survival and a satisfactory carryover of bucks has
been revealed by the annual winter deer her composition counts.
Herd composition counts show
ratios of bucks and fawns to does,
but are not total counts of the
number of deer on the ranges.
When combined with other data.
these ratios, and later ratio counts
in the spring, will provide basic .
information for ‘management of
California’s deer herds.
More than 18,000 deer were
classified in the recently completed composition. counts.
Buck ratios.were highest in the
north coastal area, with 34 bucks
to 100 doé@s in 11 herds checked.
As usual, buck ratios were lowest eaSt of the Sierra and Cascade
ranges, averaging 13° per 100 does
in 18 herds checked. Deer on the
east side of the mountains are
more vulnerable to hunting be-’
cause of better hunter access,
more open terrain and lack of
cover.
Although the number of bucks
shot on these east side ranges is
consistently higher than elsewhere in the state fawn production is as good or better. This indicates that hunting is not damaging the breeding potentia the
department said.
Fawn-to-doe ratios in the north
coastal and the east side ranges
averaged the same this year:with
each area showing 59 fawns to
every 100 does,
The winter weather has been
mild so far and the deer herds
are in good condition remaining
scattered and thus taking some
pressure off the winter ranges.
