The codlin moths and other fruit pests are kicking .harder than any animate thing because of the cold weather. The cold is causing many of them to give their.death kick. A Striking Picture. A charcoal sketch by a well known San Francisco artist has for several days past attracted much attention at the National billiard parlors where it ia being exhibited for a short time prior to being sent to the Orccker Art Gallery in Sacramento, It is the picture. of Master Grant Dorsey, the rising young bootblack who last season won local repown by eating at one sitting @ peck of green pears from the Transomit scribe’s orchard. The picture was evidently made just after Master ~ Dorsey had disposed of the last pear. It has @ seraphic. expression that outshines the sublimest effort of an overfed catfish. The Only Case of Smallpox. Superintendent Galavoti of the Derbec, whose illness with smallpox, was noted several days ago, is getting along as well as could be expected. So far as has been reported, his is the only case in the county at present, William’ Blain, the man who died Saturday at his father’s home between Bloomfield and Derbee, .had another very serious disease besides smallpox, and it was probably that instead of the latter which reallycaused his death. None of his father’s family who nursed him have yet shown any signs of having contracted the smallpox from him. How Much Cold Olives Will Survive. It is said: by experienced growers that olive trees will stand without injury cold to within ten degrees of zero. L. A. Gould, of Auburn, however, in a private letter, states that he treats’ his young olive trees about the same as peach trees, in this respect. He has had marked success in raising olives. A County Which Requirds Ne Adventrtious Aids. in Advertising tt. i A Burrows, the Grass Valley atterney, writes for the Chicago Park Times a brief description of Nevada county, in’ which he says: e Lclimate of the upper portion of this county, toward the summit of the mountains, id of course cool. Lower down in‘the latitudes of Nevada Cit and Grass Valley the climate, wife by no means semi-tropic, is delightful. Here the nights are always ,cool,. the days: never cold, and the sky always clear, the air bracing and laden with ozone. There are feally but two seasons—the wet and the dry. The wet season lasts generally about the first three months of each year. There ‘are occasional raina in November and December, April and May, but géneraly no. more than suffices to keep down the dust. For those affected with diseases of the throat or lun.8 this part of the State is a sanitarium, although its people are to busy in the exciting hunt for gold to pay proper ate tention to anything but mining. Perhaps there is no part of the State where finer apples and ‘plums are grown. Small fruits also flourish well, and grapes are found to grow very well, The extreme southern part of the county is suitable to orange culture. There.is abundance of water, but heretofore’ little of it has been used for agricultural purposes. The best ranches are those that exist in moist bottoms, along the divide. This is-not a grain county, but great quantities of hay are produced. Potatoes of finer quality‘than those ‘grown lower down are grown here. But every industry in this county has been overshadowed by that of mining. There is much excellent pasture land, and an abundance of the finest timber in the ‘‘middlé: belt’’ of this section. Some of the finest orchard Jand in this part of the State is to be found on the line of the N. G. R:-R., south of Grass Valley. Many of the settlers herc= abouts have tried Southern California, but only to return home disgusted. No attempt has ever been made to ‘boom’ this part of the State, but to those secking either investment, health or homes, it offers inducements second to no place in the world.” County Supervisere. The Board of Supervisors yesterday ordered that the sum of $7.60 be refunded to Andrew ‘Casey from the general fund for taxes overpaid. Action upon the Grand Jury’s recommendation that the county hospital be painted and otherwise repaired, was laid over till the April session, as were also the recommendations of the same body to the effect that the Sheriff’s office be removed to the room now used for the jury room, the jury te ocoupy the room now nsed as County Superintendent’s office and the Superintendent to be removed to the room formerly occupied by the Coun ty Surveyor. : ; ‘ The Grand Jury’s recommendation that an expert be appointed to ex‘amine the county officers books was brought ap, Mr. Woods moving that such expert be employed. Not. seconded. . .The Grand Jury’s recommendation that the office of Deputy District Attorney at Truckee be abolished was laid on the table, the Supervisors havand found that said officer’ is doing his duty according to law. Yesterday morning a party consisting of Mr. Wood, Jacob Arbogast had ‘been chopping down. some tres body had pinned him to the earth. Home Made Hand Grenades. Make your own hand grenades. Fill ordinary quart bottles with a satution of common _ salt, and place them where they will do most good incase of need. They will be found as nearly as servicable as the expensive hand grenades you buy. Should a fire break out throw them with force sufficient to break them. in-' to the center of the fire. The salt will form a coating on whatever object the water touches, and makes it nearly incombustible, and it will prove effeotual in many cases where a fire is just starting, while the delay in procuring water might be fatal. “fr is very late for a robust young man like you to get up in the morning,” ~ an old gentleman in a Washington hotel to a youth who-hed just come down from his room. “When I was of your age 5 o’clock found me up and doing.” “I s’pose it did, sir,” replied the vouth, ‘‘hut I guess you mever held a position under the Government.” Tnx wife of ~ Senator Beck, of Kentucky, isa descendant of a relative of George Washington, and a part of by Washington for the State of Virginia when Kentucky was the western county of that state. A law has been passed there forbidding the granting of a marriage license to any man addicted to the liquor habit. Ir. is claimed that the Volapuk language has 11 newspapers. .The devotees of the language should now save up their pennies and buy an insane asylum for the use of their proofreaders. ee Inp1AnA Democrats are greatly disgusted over the President’s surrender of the contract of patronage in that State to Senator Voorhees, and intimate that trouble will result from it. There is a practical hint for Nevada county inthe following from the Record-Union: Fully one-third of every boom is due to judicious advertising. The Placer County Board of Supervisors are aware of that fact, and unlike theshort-sighted Boards of adjoining counties, invest: in it. They have voted another $2,500 to the boom fund, and everyone who knows anything about Northern ahd Central California iz from Colorado. ilt for several daya, is so far recovered as to’be around again.
