THE AUBURN Theater Workshop will present “Varieties of '66" at
the Nevada City Elks Club March ll to aid in the drive to raise
funds to purchase the old Nevada Theater, Babe Childers, (right)

Achievement Winners Announced
Four seniors at Nevada Union
High School have been selected
to represent their school in this
year’sBank of America Achievement Awards program, Principal
William C, George announced
today.
Selected by faculty members,
the top winners will receive trophies and have the opportunity
to compete for cash awards
ranging up to $1,000,
‘The trophy winners and the:
study fields in which they were
chosen are: John’P4ul Chiara,
science and mathematics; Susan
Alice Yun, fine arts; Janis Lynn
Bow les, liberal arts and Carol
M. Leidy, vocational arts,
Eleven other students were cited
for their superior performance in
specific fields of study and will
receive certificates of merit.
They are: Raymond Earll Shrine,
mathematics; Thomas Taylor,
laboratory science; Michael P,
Crenshaw, music; Mary Kathryn Baker, art; Dinah Bachrach,
English; Nancy K, Barberii,
social science; Christina Roese,
foreign languages; Joyce E. Mabey, business; Sharon Dolores
Barron, home economics; Douglas Newnan, agriculture and
Dennis A, Harvey, trades and
\industrial arts,
After ascreening committee
carefully reviews the records of
the trophy winners, the students
chosen for the zone events will
be notified during the latter half
of March, Zone competition for
local students will be held April
14 in Marysyille, Local winners
will compete with students from
Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Nevada,
Sutter and Yuba counties,
At these zone events, a panel
of distinguished civic, business

and professional leaders will interview the students. Winners
-will be chosen on the basis of
scholastic records, extracurricular activities, and the interviews.

The drive to purchase the old
Nevada Theater in Nevada City
received a big boost Monday
night when the “Save the Theater Committee" presented the
Liberal Arts Commission with a
$500 check.
Committee chairman Mary
Geist presented the check to fund
drive chairman H.J. Ray ata
meeting of the commission in
the Nevada City Elks Hall. The
money came from the committee's "An Evening With
Charlie Chaplin" show held Friday night in Grass Valley.
Bob Wolden reported to the
group on the coming performance of the Auburn Theater
Workshop March 11 in the Nevada City Elks Hall,
This non-profit organization
has presented at least two annual
shows for the past six years and
will bring “Varieties of "66"
here as a courtesy to the local
Theater Committee Announces Several P
Penstock Players in an effort to
get the theater going in Nevada
City.
Sally Lewis, chairman of the
ways and means committee,
told of plans to sell theater seats
for $100 each. She explained
that past and future donors of
$100 or more would have a plate
with their name attached toa
seat in the theater, She was
quick to add that this did not
mean that they had purchased
that seat for future performances.
The idea was to provide a way
to permanently recognize donors
to the theater fund drive.
Mrs. Lewis also reported that
seven conducted house tours had
been scheduled in Nevada City
for the next three months with
75.to 100 persons in each group.
Funds from the tours go to the
theater fund drive.
Fund drive chairman H.J. Ray
announced that tha campaign
rojects
had brought in $15,500 and the
drive would be continued indefinitely.
Liberal Arts Commission presdent John Larue announced that
the Grass Valley Rotary Club had.
scheduled a performance of the
United States Marine Band in
Grass Valley Oct. 17 and funds
from this event would also go to
_ the theater.
H.L. Childers, chairman of
the Penstock Players announced
that an art sale and barbecue
would be held at Pioneer Park’
in May and that an artist's and
model's ball would be included
in the weekend,
