WORLD PRESS DISPATCHES OAS Agrees to Send Military Force To Dominican Republic In the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, the Peace commission of the Organization of American States established a cease-fire between the rebel group seeking to restore democratically-elected Pres. Juan Bosch to office and the 3man military junta which had seized power. On May 6th, the OAS broke its policy of non~intervention in the affairs of other states, andvotedtosend an interAmerican military force to the Dominican Republic. The force will include most of the 21,800 US paratroopers and Marines now patrolling Santo Domingo. On May 7th the military junta resigned-and was replaced by a 5-man military-civilian government with Gen, Antonio Imbert Barrera as president. Imbert as~sisted in the Trujillo assassination in 1961, and also helped gust his own friend, Pres. Juan Bosch, for being “soft on Communism”. Vietnam continued through the week with the heaviest raid of the war on May 8, involving 242 planes and 300 tons of bombs, Washington alsoinstituted a “crash program” to deepen 9 harbors in S, Vietnamto take care of increased landing of troops and supplies. eoe8 8 @ In Hayne ville, ALABAMA, the trial of Ku Klux Klansman Collie Leroy Wilkins for the murder of a white civil rights worker, Mrs. Viola Liuzzo, ended ina hung jury when 2 former members of the segregationist White Citizens Council held out for acquittal. e*e#2s 8 In Anniston, ALABAMA, the Ku Klux Klan held a huge Mother's Day rally, at which the three Klansmen charged with the murder of Mrs. Liuzzo, mother of five, received an ovation when they were introduced by Imperial Wizard Robert Shelton, Subdivisions on the District Attorney's List for violations of the State Map Act continued to occupy most of the agenda, Ac-~ cording to planning director Bill Roberts, theré are still about fourteen or fifteen left to be settled by the planning commission and the board of supervisors. The Commission denied a petition for exceptions to the County Subdivision Ordinance for Freeman's Crossing Subdivision. Hugh Harris, owner and subdivider, was not present. The denial was
based upon the County Health Department 's recommendation that all sewage must be serviced adequately, by water, with adequate treatment facilities. In this case the landis unsuitable for septic tanks, and there is no sewage system available, according to Harold Cox, county Sanitarian, The county counsel wasinstructed to redraft an ordinance to include property tax relief for farmers. Under the present assessment system all property must be taxed according to its current market value, based upon potential resale. Purpose of the suggested ordinance is to zone agricultural landspecifically, and tax it accordingly, rather than as potential subdivision or commercial property. A special meeting of the commission was scheduled for June7 th to hear arguments from interested groups on this subject. Charles Kitts, county assessor, was extended an invitation to give his views and aims on the proposal, In other action the commission granted use permits to Vita-Bark, Inc. to build a bark processing plantin Truckee, and to Jack de Ryk to build and operate an ambulance service and tool rental building also in Truckee. Tom Kirby was granted a Use Permit te construct a fifty foot television antenna in Truckee, with the provision it be adequately fenced to protect climbchildren. The report charged that failure on the part of the tax collectorto enforce collection of delinquent\unsecured ta x'es was costing the county $20,000 a year. The board of:supervisors found one tired old chestnut in the report, This grandjury, like many in years past, has recommended the creation of a department of public works under the direction of a qualified registered civil engineer. This department would have the responsibility for county roads, surveys, building design, construction and maintenance. Generally, the report praised county officials for the quality of their work andthe competence of their personnel.
