Work Is Resumed On
Yuba-Bear Complex #
Mountain Segment
Heavy Aprilrains filled the reservoirs of the Nevada Irrigation
District,. but caused no major
interuptions in work on the Bear
River phases of the district's $59
million Yuba-Bear River hydroelectric project.
Work resumed early this month
on the mountain area on segments
of the project.
The project as a whole is now
listed as 81 per cent complete
according to the 23d monthly
progress report of the district's
consulting engineers, Ebasco
Services, Inc.
The report covering the period
up to April 30 indicates there
were 302 men on the job during
the period and’ of the approved
project cost of $59,481,640, a
total of $42,661,358 hadbeen
_ expended. The project completion date is Dec. 31, of this
year.
The bridge near the intake of
the Dutch Flat flume on Bear
River was completed, 5,000 feet
of flume wall and the remaining
flume bridges were concreted.
Concreting of the foundation
footings for the Stump Canyon
Siphon was resumed.
The turbine guard valve and
penstock spool piece were installed at the Dutch Flat powerhouse andthe first life of concrete
was placed for the embedment of
the turbine spiralcase. Concreting of the tailrace walls, erection
bay floor and penthouse was

Fair Exhibits
The first two entries for the 1965
Nevada County District Fair this
August have already been received according to manager
Malcolm Hammill.
The premium books were
mailed out to exhibitors on April
27 and the first entrieswere
received April 29 when Ray and
Linda Warren entered two
thoroughbred horses and the Kentucky Flat Farm Center made an
entry for their feature booth,
The Warrens have won many
ribbons at the local fair for both
their horses and goats.
The Kentucky Flat Farm Center
has always had outstanding booths
and _ has always been early with
their entry. They have been
feature booth exhibitors ever
since the fair initiated this type
of booth, .
Hammill urged any residents
who have not received a premium
book and who want to exhibit in
the fair this year to call at the
fairgrounds office and pick up
their copy.

On the Chicago Park Powerhouse
project on Bear River, the flume
intake structure concreting was
completed. Installation of the
gates and hoist at the penstock
intake was started and backfilling
completed. The first stage concrete at the powerhouse is substantially complete and the main
transformers have been delivered
to both powerhouse'sites. The
Chicago Park project is listed as
70 per cent complete. :
TheJackson Meadows Dam and —
reservoir is 96 per cent complete.
In accordance with the operating
plan for the reservoir, the pond
elevation is now being raised to
6021 from the previously approved elevation of 5985 feet.
The outlet valve has been throttled so that all the spring runoff
is being impounded except for
releases for fish and wildlife
downstream,
The report lists the following
status of the various project sites:
Milton Bow man Conduit--100 per
cent complete; Faucherie Dam-98 per cent; Bowman-Spaulding =
Conduit --88 per cent and Rollins
Dam--99 per cent.
Scotch Broom
Breakfast To
Be Held Sunday
The 4th annual Scotch Broom
Pancake Breakfast sponsored by
the North San Juan Volunteer Fire
Department will be held from
8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the
fire hall.
The scotch broom is in full
bloom and is a beautiful sight in
and around the old ridge mining
community.
The menu will include ham,
eggs, coffee, milk and all the
pancakes one can eat for $1, 25
for adults and 50 cents for children
under 12. A chaise lounge and
pad will be given away to a lucky
ticket holder.
Funds derived from the event
will be used to build a kitchen
for the fire hall and for a new
floor.
38 Acres Already
Burned This Season
Tahoe rorest Supervisor Hank
Branagh pointed out that recent
dry windy weather has dried out
timber and brush and damaging
fires are being started.
Five man-caused fires escaped
control May Ist with one burning
five acres. All were attributed
to carelessness with warming
fires, probably abandoned by
trout fishermen out opening

To date this spring 38 acres
have already been burned over
on the Tahoe.

Fire Prevention Conference Kicks Off Fire Season
Approximately one hundred
federal, state, and local-agency
fire control personnel from
central California and western
Nevada, who are responsible for
forest and wildland protection,
attended a conference at the
University of California Alumni
Association Center near Tahoe
City last week.
These annual meetings, held
prior to the fire season, foster
better cooperation and understanding of mutual problems that
are encountered by the agencies
attending the conference.
Stephen M. Rushton, District
Ranger of the Minden Ranger
District, Toiyabe National
Forest, and General Chairman of
the 1965 Conference, stated that
the program was devoted primarily to fire prevention research, fire control, and the
youth conservation corps, The
California Conservation Camp
Program and its role in disaster
activities was also discussed.
Equipment Chairman James L.
Barnhart, Fire Prevention Officer,
District [11 Headquarters, California Division of Forestry,
arranged for demonstrations of
new andimproved equipment developed by fire control agencies
and private industry.
Porcupines carry about 25,000
quills on their bodies.
