Floating Down The
Old Accordion Flume
NEVADA COUNTY 1860
Sam had come from Nevada
Territory over the Henness Pass as
far as Eureka South, Though the
route was advertised as the fastest
and smoothest Sierra crossing,
Sam's aching body wanted a
gentlerway. He'dcome part way
by stage and part by mule and
now was prepared to walk,
Sam asked the local miners the
fastest route for foot travel to
Nevada City. It was Saturday
night and the miners were feeling
pretty good, The plight of a
disjointed traveler seeking to
walk to Nevada City struck them
as very funny.
Some advised the scenic trail
down BedBug Smith trail into the
Middle Yuba's box canyons,
Others suggested a canoe ride on
the spring high rivers, This last
train of thought led them to
recommend walking the Accordion Flume. They assured
him that would be a most interesting journey. .Sam was
convinced and set off to find the
flume.
The men had been laughing so
hardthattheir description of how
to find the flume was confused,
But, as he thought about the information offered, he was able
to piece together enough to get
started,
The moon was bright and the
trails he followed were well defined. He began to feel he was
going too far eastso he struck off
on his own through ‘the trees of a
ridge top. The wind came up
'andhewas anxious to be walking
the flume before a storm hit.
The swaying trees confused him
andhe found himself sliding down’
a gravely cliff into a deep-side
canyon.
The miners had mentioned Long
Canyon and Dark Canyon, He
had a feeling this must be Dark
Canyon and the beginning of the
flume they said was built like an
accordion, He heard the rush of
water and looked up to see he'd
slid right under the suspended
structure, He struggled through
the brush below trying to find
a way up onto the catwalk,
Sam realized that since the
flume was suspended from tree to
tree it would never have to touch
the ground, He climbed up one
of the support trees and steadied
himself to walk the narrow board
path above the water.
The flume was built of canvas
that stretched from wooden rib to
rib. The ribs were attached to
living trees and the whole was a
living, moving marvel,
Sam was very impressed as he
tried to keep his balance in the
gusty wind. He found he could
take only seven or eight steps
before losing his balance and
jumping or falling into the water.
Once after falling, his feet slipped in the water and his whole
body went in. The water was
quite cold but, he found it
actually warmer to stay in the
trough, in the water, than walk
wet into the wind,
But what he found most to his
liking was the smooth, gentle
transportation the water offered
him, By linking his arms around
his folded knees he was able to
floatalong quite gently and
rapidly, He even found that he
could stretch out full length with
his laced fingers supporting his
head andtravel in great comfort.
It was dawn when he realized
something had changed. He was
being knocked about and his body
was scraping the sides of what
tured out to be a much narrower
wooden flume of the conventionaltype.
He climbed out and walked
himself dry in the morning sun,
After only a few. miles he was in
Nevada City and quite refreshed,
He was delighted with his mode
of travel and described his experience to the townspeople,
He had told only a few when
people began to avoid him and
point at him from the street,
They claimed the Accordion
Flume was a miner's myth and
he was out of his head,
Early California Indians called
the Golden Gate "Yulupa”, which
meant "the place where the sun
plunges into the sea”.
