California Country
NO FIGHT, NO MONEY
The crowd hissed and booed and matchmaker Walter Henley
angrily told the referee, ‘If neither of those two corpses show any
sign of life in the next three rounds, call it off.””
The 20-round boxing match between “Cyclone” Paddy Ellis
and Willie O’Neal had been touted as a good one. There was standing room only at the Capital Athletic Club in Sacramento on that
evening of April 8, 1910.
But the first nine rounds of this main event had been a great
disappointment. From the beginning the two boys stalled, took
turns at comical head ducking stunts and only occasionally
managed to land a feathery jab on their opponent. The loafing
exhibition had finally become so raw that Henley threatened to call
it off. :
After the admonition, the boxers made a show at putting on a
fight. In the tenth round O’Neal got a groggy look and tried his best
to receive what would look like a ligitamate knockout from his
adversary. But the red-headed Ellis couldn’t deliver.
At the end of the 12th round the referee stepped to the center of
the ring and announced there was no fight and no money.
But then the crowd saw the fight they came to see.
“It was your fault,”’ Ellis yelled at O’Neal. ‘‘I had to chase you
around the ring before I could get close enough to take a swing.”
“What ya’ got in your gloves?” taunted O’Neal, “‘marshmallows?”’
The insults reached a point that Ellis’ second could no longer
stand. He threw a punch at O’Neal and the Australian fighter immediately took into him in a free-for-all brawl that demonstrated
that he did, indeed, know how to fight.
The police stepped in, another match began and Henley
donated the two fighters’ earnings for the night to charity. Ellis and
O’Neal both went to court to demand their money, about $300, but
the judge was a boxing fan himself and their request was denied.
