Hungry Students..Mice Invade
..lax Training..Mall Ideas —
Local Spanish students
had areal test of their
ability last week and they
only had to travel up the
road a bit to do it.
Mrs. Shirley Shinn took
32 of her students from
the Seven Hills School in
Nevada City out to the
Casa Gonzales for lunch.
All of the students had
to order in Spanish and
Mr. and Mrs. Gonzales
cooperated in the project .
by serving up the meal
and refusing to speak
English. There may have
been a few hungry students, but Mrs. Gonzales
said the luncheon was a
great success.

There seems to have
been an invasion of mice
in the Twin Cities area
of late and it caused considerable concern in
some quarters when women walked into local
business houses sporting a small mouse pearched on their shoulder.
Actually, there's no
cause for alarm. The
miceare not real. They
are the latest invention
fromthe mind of Marge
Kopp and the hands of the
retarded persons working at the Nevada County
Community Sheltered
Workshop at the fairgrounds.
The mice, made from
eucalyptus pods, were
originally designed to be
used as Christmas tree
decorations, but several
people were so delighted
with them, that Marge
‘had the design modified
into a pin. The result
was more money for mice
and a lot of surprised
residents,

Word has it that when
the new county assessor
takes over Jan 1 he may
be allalone in the office.
County appraisers who
took special training in
the hopes of being compensated for this additional training are reportedly disallusioned and
are looking for greener
pastures. Now everyone
can complain about their
taxes being incorrect and
be right because next year
the job will probably be
done by inexperienced
personnel and the taxpayers will be footing
the bill again to train
them. That's long range
palnning for you.

‘It looks like Union Alley
in Nevada City has settled into its final resting
place. Because of the
freeway bridge construction, utility relocation
and construction of new
drains, the street was
continually being moved
to allow the work to take
place. Last week the
street, on anew alignment, which is just
ab out where it was before the work started,
was given a final blacktopping.

Mrs. Mina Ireton of
Nevada City last week
became the first patient
tobe admitted to the new
Spring Hill Manor convalescent hospital.
Mrs. Ireton is shown
here with administrator
L.R. "Bud" Burke and
Mrs. L.M. Koetke, R.N.
receiving a corsage to
markthe event, She will
have the distinction of
being number one on the
records of the new facility.
Mrs. Ireton was born
in Sun City, Kansas and
we discussed many things
but her favorite topics
were children and the
beauty of the new convalascent hospital and the
site chosen for it.
Mina said she liked eveeryone connect ed ‘with
the hospital.
From our observation,
this is a functional and
well planned building,
it has incorporated into
itevery safety feature
known to protect the patients and has a fine and
competent staff on hand to
care for our citizens.
