Century three is almost here
By: PHYLLIS L. SMITH
Hundreds of individuals,
groups and communities across
the United States of America are . @
outlining goals, setting up
special projects and, in some
cases, actually achieving “big . ;
things” in preparation for the
Breentennial Year
1976.‘‘Opening the door” onto {#
Century Three is one primary
objective of many of the special
observances now on the drawing
boards and general interest is .

nationally.
being generated
The American Revolution Me
Bicentennial in Washington,
D.C., publishes a fascinating
journal entitled ‘Bicentennial
Newsletter” the summer issue
of which has just been received
by the Nugget editor.
From this ‘‘Special Horizons’’
issue we have gleaned the
following material which should
give our readers a great deal to
think about during the next
. three years.
Students of American History
should know that Colorado is the
only state of the union which will
be celebrating its centennial
(1873) concurrently with our
National Bicentennial (1776). A
grass roots committee is right
now deeply involved with
national commissions in consonance with ‘Horizons ’76”
aims.
A citizen-motivated
revitalization of Niagra Falls,
New York, has resutled in that
city being chosen as the ‘First
Bicentennial City.’’ New and
improved highways leading into
Niagra Falls and its project,
Rainbow Center, are scheduled
for completion in -time to
facilitate the anticipated influx
of bicentennial visitors there.
The 100-year anniversary of
the City of Spokane,
Washington, is to be observed
during an. “International
Exposition On The
Environment” from May
through October of 1974.
American Forest _ Institute
will participate also ‘by making
available, starting in 1975,
BEALE AFB — SSgt. John E. Yost, 9th Organizational Maintenance Squadron, is
presented the Distinguished Flying Cross by Col. Patrick J. Halloran, commander
of the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing during ceremonies held here recently.
The sergeant was awarded the DFC for his participation as a HC-47 flight engineer
aboard a special night flight over the Republic of Vietnam November 17, 1971.
Despite marginal weather, the threat of enemy ground fire and the loss of an
engine, Sergeant Yost's thorough knowledge, courage, and perserverance,
displayed in the face of known hazards, resulted in the successful completion of
the mission requiring low-level observation and orbits over extremely hostile
territory. (USAF Photo)
“‘Trees From The Nation’s
History.” Private citizens and
organizations may then obtain
seeds from six trees which
exemplify the importance of
forests in our _ national
development: These trees are:
. The common apple a
symbol of westward migration
and noted in folklore about the
legendary “Johnny Appleseed.”’
-The white oak a species of
the famed “Charter Oak” -in
which the Charter of
Connecticut was hidden when
King James the Second ordered
its surrender in 1687.
. The white pine which gave
birth to the nation’s first
industry, that of lumbering.
. The eastern hemlock State
tree of Pennsylvania.
The live oak used
extensively in the days of
“wooden ships and iron men.”
The U. S. Navy, during that
time, acquired many forests of
live oaks for ship construction.
“Old Ironsides” is a famous
example.
. The Douglas fir a conifer
which produces more timber
than any other American
species; and is, nationally, or
most important commercial
tree.
And. .the National
Aeronautics and Space
Administration NASA has
announced its intention to stage”
a landing of a spaceship on the—~ ~
planet Mars on the Fourth of
July, 1976 to institute a search
for life on that sphere.
These are but a miniscule few
of the special plans for national
observance of our Bicentennial
Year. As Century Three approaches, the tempo of planning will
be stepped up as time marches
on for all of us. The Nugget will
publish more on this from time
to time. Persons desiring
additional material may write to
the national headquarters of
ARB at. 736 Jackson Place,
N.W., Washington, D.C. 20276,
and ask to have their names
placed on the mailing lists.
