By RAY ARNETT, Director California Department of Fish and Game Environmental protection and enhancement is a vital, even a key function of your Department of Fish and Game. The key to the conservation, maintenance or enhancement of a fish or wildlife species is directly dependent on the condition and extent of its habitat-the clean, productive land and water required for its existence, For birds, fish and animals, like man, must have a suitable environment in which to live. Without it they die. It is as simple as that. And it is an interesting and oft-quoted fact that fish and wildlife species can often be considered monitors of man's environment, Just as coal miners in years past kept a caged canary with them in the mine, depending on the distress of the bird to warn of the presence of deadly coal gas, modern man can view the distress of fish and wildlife populations as clear warnings of danger or pollution of the lands and waters on which man, too, depends. For more than a century -since 1870 when the old Board of Fish Commissioners, forerunner of the Fish and Game. Commission, was established-: considerations have guided Fish and game con: environmental servation efforts in California. Free clinics offered by health office Dr. Bob H. Roberts, Nevada’ County Health Officer, reminds the public of the free clinics offered by the Health Department each month, On the second Wednesday the immunization clinic is held at the Veterans Memorial Building in Grass Valley between 1 and 2 p.m. For the present time the Nevada City immunization clinic, which is normally held on the first Tuesday of the month will be canceled. There will be no clinic in Nevada City until further notice. Dr. Roberts urges parents to begin immunizations early to prevent infectious diseases. Immunizations are usually started at two or three months of age and "booster" inoculations should be given at appro-, priate intervals throughout life. . Parents should check their own. immunizations as well ‘as their ' childrens’. . The following immunizations are given free of, charge: diphtheria, tetanus (lockjaw), pertussis (whooping cough), and poliomelitis. Vaccine is also available for both kinds of measles, The Nevada County Health Department also offers to the public a free monthly skin testing program for tuberculosis. All food handlers are required, by county ordinance, to have _ tuberculosis clearance. Wildlife must have suitable environment The Board of Fish Commissioners, the first wildlife conservation agency in the country, was charged with the restoration and preservation of fish in California waters. Wrapped up in the day-today work of fish and wildlife conservation in the state for the next half century was the task of guarding and improving the environment. This was taken seriously even then, in a period when in the view of conservationists today, nothing was being done publicly or privately in the field of ecology. An indication of the importance of environmental concerns is the fact that in 1926, during a reorganization of the commission, a separate bureau was established to deal with pollution problems, The following year the administrative functions of the original commission were assumed by the newly established Division of Fish and Game, set up within the Department of Natural Resources, The Water Projects (now Environmental Services) Branchof the department was established in 1959 to handle matters re_ lated to the impact of water quality and land or water developments on fish and wildlife resources. In 1970 the environmental thrust of department activities was broadened and strengthened. The Water Projects Branch was retitled the Environmental Services Branch and handed additional responsibilities. The new title, I reported then, was selected to better describe the broad environmental functions of the branch, including both land and water projects. ~ Since then--largely as a result of the tireless work of agencies such as the Department of Fish and Game--people have become increasingly aware of the necessity of preserving and enhancing the environment. Suddenly we were no longer a voice in the wilderness, Overnight "experts" from a dozen other fields were echoing what we had been saying unheard for 100 years. The Nevada County Nugget .
