Productive Valley, Foot-Hill and Mountain & Combination. of Natural Advantages Not Excelled in the State—An Emncouraging Season. {8. F. Chronicle, Jan. 1, 1889. . Nevada county clainas special attention as one of the féw counties of Culiforniain which the three principal industries of the State—mining, agriculture and horticulture—ve extensively carried on side by sidet"The county is accessible by rail, the Central Pacific Railroad running along its southern boundary a considerable distance, and crossing its extreme eastern end, while the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad intersects its central portion, extendingnorth from Colfax to Nevada City and passing through Grass Valley in its route. Geographically the county lies a ‘trifle north of the centrai line of the State, and extendsfrom the Sacramento valley on the west to and beyond the summit of the Sierra Nevada. — ‘ »-In the western portion the altitude averages some 1300 feet above the sea level, and the surface consists of gently sloping hills and°ridges with here and there large sized tracts of comparatively level land. In thé central section is the upper part of the horticultural belt, and here also are most ofthe great quartz and gravel mines which have. since pioneer days been yielding such vast quantities of! gold. The eastern extremity is very. mountainous in character, the principal industries thereof being lumbering, iceacres of land are contained in the horticultural belt of the county, which includes the townships of Nevada, Grass Valley, Rough and Ready and Bridgeport. : 5 A great variety of productions is insured within these limits. Fruits and ing a long and warm season, thrive particularly well on lands facing to the south where the rays of the sun have full force; while the larger and more slowly maturing fruits flourish on the cooler and more moist lands with a between the ridges ‘and hills have in most cases but little brush upon them, and though well furnished with water from springs and streams are not as well calculated for fruit growing‘as for the production of hay and pasturage. raised here is the pear, which is followed closely by the apple, both attaining in Nevada county the greatest perfection in size, flavor and keeping qualities. Grape growing is rapidly becoming an important industry here, vines Nevada county port wine has shattered constitution. ; LOCAL DIRECTORY. _ Sheriff's Sale.
