NEW DRILLS
AND DIFFICULTIES
To go back to mining, it may
“be of interest to note that acetylene lamps took the place of
candies in 1906; in 1910, we
were trying out Leyner drills
‘and hollow steel, which meant
drill sharpening machines, because we found that hand sharpening was not accurate.enough
for the delicate Leyner. George
Starr said he brought the one he
was trying up for lunch every
day. But they drilled fast when
they were working well. For a.
while we picked out the best men
and paid them $3.25 for the
Leyners. When we started using
drill sharpeners, we soon found:
s twice as fast as by
hand, they had to sharpen twice
as many. But by experimenting
the troubles were overcome,
drill sharpeners are new used,

The fate of the Nevada County
Chamber of Commerce was
much in doubt Tuesday as a result of criticisms about the legality of its organization raised
by a supervisor a week earlier.
Dean Lawrence
had scored the chamber on several counts, including its legal
structure as a non profit corporation. The county provides
most of the chamber's financing
but exercises no control over
its activities other than budgetary, she charged, —

the questions raised by Mrs.
Lawrence.
At Tuesday's meeting, Todd
attempted to resolve the situation because the chamber cannot
receive funds to pay its staff
ever, no solution was reached
by the board, so Todd indicated
he will proceed with the court
test which could take up tothree
months,
However, Board Chairman
Willie Curran, upset that the
lack of chamber funds may de©
stroy the organization, called a
discussion of the subject for 2
p.m. next Tuesday and promised
that numerous representatives
from chambers will attend.
Other business handled by the

method this nursing assistance

For their part, the supervisors indicated the home health
