2 The Nevada County Nugget, Sept. 22, 1971
North San Juan News.
By Idabel Covert
The WSCS of the North San’
Juan United Methodist Church
held a combined bake sale, rummage sale, and a Silent auction
Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Fire
Hall, Rummage sales are familiar to us all, as are bake sales,
but a silent auction is something
else, Where else can you see
three normally well-behaved
sensible ladies bidding to the
skies on a used alarm clock?
A hardly-used wig in its cute
little case went for. $2, Then
there was the toothbrush glass
adorned with a flirtatious mermaid that nobody wanted, Oh .
well, These affairs are surefire money raisers, and this is
where you have the rare opportunity to buy a loaf of delicious
home-baked bread, an apple pie
fresh from the oven, or if you
are really lucky, one of Nellie
Dudley’s "Crazy Cakes,"
Phyllis and Fred Butz of Celestial Valley celebrated Phyllis's birthday last Sunday by taking in the Constitution Day parade in Nevada City, then driving to Foresthill to visit, their

weekend were Mr. and Mrs,
Charles ‘Hutchison and Mrs,
Hilda Wilson, all from Seattle,
Hilda Wilson is Cecile's sisterin-law, . and sister of Mrs,

Mrs. Leroy Elam reported
that her nephew Warren Hamilton, of Grass Valley, is home
on leave from the Navy. He is
stationed in Vallejo.
It is a pleasure to announce
that Mary Brown, (Mrs, Henry),
won one blue and one red ribbon for her lovely oil paintings
at the County Fair, Mrs, Brown's
work is representational in nature, bright and colorful, and
quite professional in quality,
The Browns celebrated their
50th wedding anniversary last
June 8, with a dinner with all
their family in attendance,

Taxpayer must
pay despite
court decision
The State Superme Court's
decision on the constitutionality of California's public school
financing system does not relieve any taxpayer of his obligation for paying his 1971-72
property taxes on time, in the
view of the State Board of
Equalization,
This opinion was expressed
today by Board Member
William M. Bennett of San Rafael, in response to recent questioning by taxpayers~ as to
whether the recent State Supreme Court decision, which
ruled that the public school.financing system of California is
unconstitutional, excuses taxpayers from paying any part of
their 1971-72 property taxes,
The first installment of 197172 property taxes will become
delinquent Dec, 10, 1971,
Bennett pointed out that the
Supreme Court decision of Aug.
30 did not involve the granting
of an injunction against the
collection of taxes, or any final
order respecting any taxpayer's
‘ obligation to pay his property
, taxes, The Supreme Court's
action was to send the case
back to the Superior Court of
Los Angeles county for trial,
The lawsuit was brought by
a group of Los Angeles county
. public school children and their
parents as a class action against
county and' state officials, seeking a judicial declaration that
California's school financing
system is unconstitutional,

With 13 inches of snow in Denver it seems wise to get busy with winter chores early
this vear. We love the actual heat as well as the aesthetic warm Sf open wood fires and keep
two of them going all winter. Mr. Gleason who supplies the wood to keep them, cut it months
ago so it would be just right. Soon he will be racking it in the breezeway where we can get it
easily. The chimneys are all cleaned fire safe, The chimney hood of the kitchen one, which is
also a two burner cook stove when the electricity fails, had burned through and Mr, Browning
had to install a new one, It does pay to start early, Our winter hay man is looking around for
some real good alfalfa, I feel so sorry for the livestock on a snowy cold day when their nice
fragrant green alfalfa turns out to be weedy and absolutely without any smell, It must be just
as tasteless too. Yes, I know and all the neighborhood can plainly see I do keep our cows too
fat, There is an old saying, I don't know the exact words or where it came from but, it goes
something like this "it's a contented man who has a big barn and a plump wife," Well my husbanddoesn't like plump women but I think plump contented cows make him happy even if he does
chide me a bit about them, Two lambs are ready for the butcher, Their timing was good, Last
years lamb is down to some riblets and a couple of shanks, When Mr, Doolan of the Mobile Village checks roofs next week it will complete the winter preparations except cleaning ditches,
This is young Mike Jontes job and we got some new boots to inspire him to get right in and
dig deep, He has done a beautiful job of keeping the hill pastures green all summer but at present
his only real interest seems to be football, All summer he had me convinced that baseball was
the only thing that really mattered, Mike just started to NUHS this year, If enthusiasm will do
the job they are in for some good football years, They sure started off right, The junior varsity
played Reno last Friday and won, If I try real hard I can remember when the most important
thing in the world to me was the huge yellow chrysanthemum with the big blue and gold "Bruins"
on it which I always managed to afford for the big games, That was almost 50 years ago tho’
and my enthusiasm now is for easy chairs and lots of peace and quiet, i

Mrs, Marguerite Payne who lives down Highway 20 a piece from us, on the old Eugene
Walter Sr. ranch, is going to leave our community for a couple of years, She is going on a mission to Germany for the Mormon Church, Marguerite tends her flock of sheep and works at the
Grass Valley Library at present, She will leave the ranch at the end of September and her pet
Rathsheba will come to live with us for a time, Bathsheba is a sheep, Marguerite will remain
at her job until the middle of October when she will go to the Mission House in Salt Lake, Later, she will spend a couple of months brushing up on her German in preparation for the mission
and will go to Germany the first of the year. ‘I feel a kind of kinship with Marguerite tho’ I am
not of the Mormon faith, We have a nephew in Italy on a mission just now, It's an unselfish thing
thesémissionaries. do but they win too, Our young nephew Lynn went away a gangling youngster
and from his letters we can tell he will be coming home a fine weal man, j

Bathsheba will not be joining our flock until October, but this morning Myrtle Jane came
to visit, Myrtle is most unhappy. It nearly broke her heart when her family left her, Mrs, Tinsley tells me she recognizes the school bus and waits for it to arrive because she knows it's
going to bring someone to talk to her, Her conversation is limited to Baa but she sure loves
people. When I go out into the pasture she leaves the sheep to join me, Of course, when Cynthia
washere she didn't know I was on earth but even I am better than another sheep, Myrtle Jane is’
a beautiful well kept ewe that was a 4-H project of Cynthia Tinsley's several years ago, Now
she just supplies locker lambs for the family. : .

Miss Dee Dee Moore spent Labor Day night with her friend, Miss Nola Vogt, so that
they might go to school together the next morning, The girls are both Sheep (men?) and both
started to NUHS this year, Dee Dee is going on with her sheep but for this year, while recuperating from her recent surgery, she will start a new strain and so will only have a few to tend.
Nola has just completed a very successful breeding season, She entered nine animals at the
Sacramento fair and most of the ‘entries and classes placed 2nd or 3rd, The Hampshire competition was very. heavy but she brought home a 2nd place for her best Hampshire yearling Ewe
and did very well with her choice Hampshire Ram Lamb, Her Cheviot Ram was Champion of the
show. At the District Fair the same Cheviot Ram took Champion again and the Hampshire Ram
Lamb was also Champion, The yearling Hampshire Ewe that placed second at Sacramento also
won Champion, The other 10 entries here at home did very well, She also had two Fat Lamb
winners for the auction on Sunday. In showmanship she placed 3rd, Meg Sailor also of Rough
and Ready took top honors, Young Dan Jauregui was the second place winner,

The Allan Campbells killed a rattler on their ranch last week, Mrs, Campbell said it
was about three feet long and had five rattles, The family was inside when they heard the noise
which they recognized immediately, even though they are city folk, They found their cat outside
playing with the treacherous creature, Mrs, Campbell hopes there won't be any more but even
if there is she thinks maybe the cat will protect them,
