Park Ban Against
Dogs To Be Lifted
SACRAMENTO—Starting Oct, 1, the ban against dogs overnight in state park campgrounds will be lifted for one year to give
man's best friend his first chance in 22 years to be a good neighbor and camper, Also starting on that date and extending through
April 30, camping and day-use fees will be reduced 50 per cent,
except in those desert parks that
normally receive heavy winter
use,
The order opening the state's
79 campgrounds to dogs was
signed by Parks and Recreation
Director William Penn Mott Jr.
last July. Based on the results
of public hearings, letter, and
legislative and Park Commission
recommendations, the order also
set the following controls:
Vicious or unusually noisy dogs
will not be permitted to enter
or allowed to remain in a park,
During the day, dogs must be
kept on a leash of not more
than six feet in length, or must
be confined within a vehicle, No
domestic animal may be turned
loose at any time within a state

A shortage exists for substitute teachers in county schools,
according to Edward Fellersen,
county superintendent. This condition exists in the 11 elementary
districts and the high school, he

Wolters Resigns
County Public
Defender Post
The Nevada County Board of
Supervisors have accepted the
resignation of Harold Wolters,
public defender.
The Nevada County Board of
Supervisors, accepted, with regret, the resignation of Harold
Wolters as public defender. The
resignation takes effect Oct, 31.
He has held the post for three
years,
Wolters, in discussing his decision, told a reporter that the
job was "taking too much time"
from his private legal practice
and "I just don't want to be public defender any more,"
The position entails being legal counsel for indigent defendants in criminal felony cases,
Board Adopts
Policy On Sign

The Nevada County Board of
Supervisors have adopted a policy which prohibits private advertising signs on county road
rights-of-way,
The decision was made during
the Sept, 19 meeting of the board
following a question posed by
public works Director Jack
Meade, who asked if the board
wanted to allow these signs of
rights-of-way. The response was
quick and negative,
The ruling was adopted as a
policy rather than an ordinance
because any signs that do exist
violated the county's property
right as owner of the right-ofway,

Power Outage
A power outrage was caused
by gusty winds Thursday
evening, caused by a broken primary Pacific Gas and Electric
Company wire on McCourtney
Road. The outrage was confined to Penn Valley and a portion of Grass Valley. The utility
firm that power was out only
about five minutes on East Main
up the Hill to Chester and up to
a few hours in the west portion,

A contract was awarded to
Sierra Paving Co. for construction on Soda Springs Road, by
the county board of supervisors
Sept. 19. A check for half the
cost was received fromthe developers of Serene Lakes, who
are sharing in the expense, Sierra Paving was low bidder at
