During the ‘August recess, Congressman Johnson visited sixteen of the twenty counties which make up the Second Congressional District, reporting to chambers of commerce, service clubs, industrial, agricultural and other organizations on the progress of the 90th Congress, So far. during the 1968 session, Congress has considered nearly 7,000 measures which have been introduced in both the House and the Senate, with 557 measures actually ._passed by the House of Representatives, upward, FRB reports $30 billion rate during the second quarter, with a growing concentration of the industry on (low priced) apartments rather than (high priced) single family units. But consumer spending generally remained cautious, despite a rapid ($35 billion) pace in the auto and parts field. The labor markets continued tight with nonfarm employment reaching 67.9 million in June, and the jobless rate holding below 4 per cent. Recent wage negotiations and the consequent wage increases should bolster consumer budgets. The $16 billion package of fiscal restraint passed in late June by Congress dealt: higher taxes to both individuals and corporations. Its passage, however, should take some of the pressure off monetary policy, which has carried the brunt of the antiinflationary struggle recently, the Review states. A touch of spring fever characterized Western business activity during the spring and early summer months, Mixed trends appeared in sec‘ond quarter statistics as the aerospace and heavy construction industries lagged somewhat, offsetting the strength in homebuilding, farming, and other industries. Nonfarm employment in the West remained unchanged during
the spring quarter--nationally the figure increased at a 2 per cent annual rate over this period. Unemployment rose slightly in the West while holding level in the nation, ~ Consumers in most Western cities felt a slight easing of the upward trend in retail prices, But despite the recent improvement at the regional level, by mid year retail prices were sharply above their mid-1967 levels. Banks in the West, as elsewhere, were subject to increased monetary pressure inthe second quarter of 1968, Nevertheless, Western banks easily outpaced other large banks in the growth of total credit, loans, and deposits during that quarter and over the first. half as a whole. Business demand for credit was the strongest element inthe loan expansion, In spite of a sharp reduction in the flow of savings into both Western savings-and-loan associations and commercial banks, mortgage lending by these institutions increased substantially during the second quarter. Constitution Day speaker selected Associate Justice Marshall McComb of the California Supreme Court will be the principal speaker for the Constitution Day ceremonies in Nevada City, the afternoon of Sunday, September 15, The Nevada City Masonic Lodge is sponsoring a parade and patriotic ceremonies for the second year, to celebrate the 181st anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. The firm of Holt and Racon, Oxnard, California has the $43,879 contract, , The system will be financed by a $55,000 Farmers Home Administration bond. Two arrested Two of three men suspected of burglarizing the Gold Flat Firehouse Saturday evening are in jail with sheriff's officers and Nevada City police searching for the third man, James Allen Williams, 18, and Joseph Patrick Waddell, 17, both Nevada City, were arrested early Saturday morning and charged with burglary. Undersheriff Frank Gallino told The Union this morning that a witness saw a car and three men at the firehouse described the men and the car to the. sheriff's officers and two were picked up about three hours later. The third man got away.
