Prices still moving
At midyear both retail and
wholesale prices were still moving upward, according to the current issue of the Monthly Review,
published by the . Federal
Reserve Bank of San Francisco,
The second quarter posted an
overall price increase in the
4 per cent range along with a
5 per cent annual rate of increase in real out-put. But still,
there were scattered signs of
price easiness in such areas
as copper, grain, and steel
_serap. .
Gross national product (GNP)
rose. $20 billion to an $851billion annual rate during the
poniont with one-third of the increase in expanded bysiness in“wventoriés;° Defense spending
jumped by $2 1/2 billion to a
$79 billion annual rate, but future
Vietnam spending trends are
still uncertain. Residential construction edged up slightly toa

Johnson returns
to Washington
Congressman Harold T. (Bizz)
Johnson of the Second (mountainvalley) Congressional District
has returned to Washington for
"the final weeks of the session.
During the ‘August recess,
Congressman Johnson visited
sixteen of the twenty counties
which make up the Second Congressional District, reporting
to chambers of commerce, service clubs, industrial, agricultural and other organizations
on the progress of the 90th Congress,
So far. during the 1968 session,
Congress has considered nearly
7,000 measures which have been
introduced in both the House and
the Senate, with 557 measures
actually ._passed by the House of
Representatives,
upward, FRB reports
$30 billion rate during the second
quarter, with a growing concentration of the industry on (low
priced) apartments rather than
(high priced) single family units. But consumer spending generally remained cautious, despite a rapid ($35 billion) pace in
the auto and parts field.
The labor markets continued
tight with nonfarm employment
reaching 67.9 million in June,
and the jobless rate holding below 4 per cent. Recent wage negotiations and the consequent
wage increases should bolster
consumer budgets.
The $16 billion package of fiscal restraint passed in late June
by Congress dealt: higher taxes
to both individuals and corporations. Its passage, however,
should take some of the pressure
off monetary policy, which has
carried the brunt of the antiinflationary struggle recently,
the Review states.
A touch of spring fever characterized Western business activity during the spring and early
summer months,
Mixed trends appeared in sec‘ond quarter statistics as the
aerospace and heavy construction industries lagged
somewhat, offsetting the
strength in homebuilding, farming, and other industries.
Nonfarm employment in the
West remained unchanged during
the spring quarter--nationally
the figure increased at a 2 per
cent annual rate over this period.
Unemployment rose slightly in
the West while holding level in
the nation, ~
Consumers in most Western
cities felt a slight easing of the
upward trend in retail prices,
But despite the recent improvement at the regional level, by
mid year retail prices were
sharply above their mid-1967
levels.
Banks in the West, as elsewhere, were subject to increased
monetary pressure inthe second
quarter of 1968, Nevertheless,
Western banks easily outpaced
other large banks in the growth
of total credit, loans, and deposits during that quarter and
over the first. half as a whole.
Business demand for credit was
the strongest element inthe loan
expansion,
In spite of a sharp reduction
in the flow of savings into both
Western savings-and-loan associations and commercial banks,
mortgage lending by these institutions increased substantially during the second quarter.
NOT MUCH REMAINS of Refief Hill but afew scattered buildings such as this. But back in the 1850's it was a prosperous
mining camp. Thompson and West's History of Nevada County,
1880, had this to say: "Relief Hill situated on the South Yuba
river three miles east of North Bloomfield. Captain Monroe,
J. K. Reid, Burnham and Tuttle and some others settled here
‘as early as 1853, and engaged in mining. In 1858 it contained
100 voters."
