Methodist preacher who was here told one of his friends; just as he was shaking the dust off his boots, that Nevada City was.the wickedest place in all California, We have always been of that opinion and have labored hard to turn the erring ones from their wicked ways; bat alas, it is no go, and now we say calmly and dispassionutely, that all’ evil doers We have “did” our duty. Only» short time ago we called.a sinner one side and attempted to give him some good advice, He listened attentively to our admonitions, and afequal to that of .a government mule, he said: “‘Young man, you have mistaken your calling in preaching to Marshal;~ Baldridge has made a good Marshal and is well thouyht of by the people, having performed his duties in a very satisfactory manner for the past three years, The mails from San Francisco arrive at Colfax at 11:15 every night but we donot receive them in this city until 11:18 the next day. Wouldn't it be nice if we could get them early the next morning ? L. Nathan, in the Transcript Block, has just received an immense stock of new goods. In a day or two his advertisementwill appear in this paper, He says he prices. Good news continues to come from the .Chapman ranch mine, Quite a little village has sprung up there during» #he past year. More ledges have been found and . tock that pays well has been brought to the surface, Charles Nichols, who has just served out his term in' the County Jail for drunken ‘and disorderly conduct was arrested last evening by Marshal Baldridge on a charge of attempting to break out of the City Fuller, the man. who published the card against the Hebrews, in Grass Valley, has turned“up again. He is at North San Juan to’ the great discomfort of the merchants of that euterprising little town. Why should hydraulic miners pay taxes’ on'their property to the State, when the State is doing allin its power through the little squirt Hart, to.destroy their property? Fifteen car loads of beef cattle were were shipped from Reno to San Franco last Tuesday, and another lot of 1,320 head is about to be sent over from that town, The ranchers in the lower part of the county are in high glee. The last, storm did the business—good crops’ are assured.’ Hay will be cheap. Mrs. Bradley purchased the residence ofthe estate of H.-S, Brad. ley, deceased, at Sheriff's, Sale for $1,117 50the amount of the judgment and costs. . : Mrs. Dr; Ruth will open @ shooting gallery in Grass Valley in a few days at the room on-Mill street recently occupied by’ Mis. The Citizens Bank up to noon yesterday purchased $8,000 worth, of gold'taken out of three mines in this township. Poor Harry Hill has been robbed again of a lot of provisions, The thief ought to bé thrown down some deep shaft, Saturday was monthly pay day at the New York Hill and Empire mines, when nearly $11,000 was disbursed, ; Mrs. Thomas, mother of Mrs, W. H. Crawford, has returned home after long visit at Oakland; ~~ "The case of A. I, Zekind, for violation of the Sunday law has been postponed till Thursday morning. The people are thirsting for it, and if we wicked people, as you call: us, do uot do something to help you out, people will swear there is nothing in your infernal sheet.” We left. that chap with the firm conviction that was helping to build up our business, and we doing all in our power to destroy it, That’s why we have given up preaching, and turned the matter of reclaiming sinners over to ‘Daniel’s Band.” —_—— —. -~be Chloroform and Robbery, Sunday night, between 11 and 12 o’elock, J. W. Bobinson, who i{esides on Water street, was awakened out of his sleep under the impression that he heard robbers at his window, trying to: cut through a pane of glass. He got up and went cout on the porch, but beiny’ in a confused state of mind from some cause, hardly kuew what he was about. The fresh air somewhat revived him, and he looked around the outside of the premises, but seeing no one,,.came in and went to bed again, taking the precaution to remove his purse, which was in his pants’ pocket, and place it in the middle of the bed, under the sheet, between himself and wife. When he awoke’ yesterday morning, between 6 and it o'clock, he felt the same heavy oppressive senthe night, On looking for his purse, which contained thirty-seven dol: lars, it-could not be found.’ He then awoke his wife who was in a soufd sleep, and related to her the ciroumstances. Diligent search was made on and about the bed, but the purse could not be found, and Mrs. Robinson complained of the same drowsy sensation, The conclusion arrived at is, that the robber was in the house and had administered chloroform to both of them, and when Robinson awoke, he secreted himself, saw where the purse of money had’ been got to sleep again. the robber gave him another dose, took the purse and went on his way rejoicing. Another Bonauzn. The Gold Flat Eureka mine, ‘situ ated a short distance south of the old Sneath & Clay mine, and about one mile from this city, is proving itself a regular bonanza, and. is exceeding the most sanguine expectations of the stockholders, Work was commenced on the mine about 10 months ago, and after the ledge had been struck, a number of crushings were taken out, the one previous to the last yielding $63 ‘a ton. The last crushing of forty-four tons, which has just been completed at Crosby’s mill, gave two bars of gold, one weighing 320 ounces and the other 23 ounces, making a total of 342 ounces, worth $164 per ounce, or $5,643, being over $128 per'tom. The ine!inv is down 120 feet, from the bottom of which the tunnel or pay chute extends 200 feet; The mine is owned by John Trenberth & Co.,. mostly Nevada City men, while a few hundred shares are held in Grass Valley, The ledge is believed to be an extension or continuation of the famous Sneath «NEVADA CITY (Caurorwna); impression that *‘Daniel’s Band” onlyinten:led to-make: one trip to this ‘first trip would . be That's where @ mistake . from Mr. Hopkins, of the C. The Omaha is believed by many, who have worked in it, to be a good mine, It has been idlé for some time; the last time any work was done on the the property, being ander the supervision of M. Dodsworth. Weare also informed that the Scotia will again commence work, and that Mr, Stoddart is expected in Grass Valley ina few days, to make arrangements to that effect. The New York Hillis looking somewhat better than it did a few weeks since, a new ledge having been struck in the mine, which shows a very good quality of ore. It 1s estimated that the clean up this month will go something over $6,000. —<——~“‘olity Election, _ Theytime for holding the City have scarcely heard» the subject ine; better, far better it would be if . mentiéned.—Itis-an-important mat. ter, and some plan “should be adoptéd for the selection of those gentlemen who are to be elected in she place of Messrs. Locklin, Casper and Gillet—a majority of the Board, We are not informed whether any of the above gentlemen are candidates for re-election or not, but one thing is certain, however, that Nevada City has never, from first dorganization been represented by three more faithful, hard-working and -honest Trustees as K, Casper, J. C. Locklin and Felix Gillet have proved themselves-to-be, During their whole administration they have honestly and faithfully endeavored to do their whole duty without fear or favor, and are deserving of the wellwishes of every citizen whohas the interests of the city at heart, ‘ The Water Pressure. As soon as the we ther is settled the Chief Engineer will ascertain by practical testswhether the.pressure of water is greater or tess than it . was before the improvements were made at the Company’s works, The TRANSCRIPT’S press can not be rut one-half as fastas it did before the change was made;and we believe there must be some obstruction in the main pipe, for certainly the changes made should give us more instead of less power. Previous to the improvements the Chief Engineer made several tests and the peoplé are anxious to see the second test’ made—and so are we. Ifitshall be found that the pressure is asgreat asever, the TRANSCRIPT’s preases will have to be run by steam uuless other attachments can be made to increase the power, * -ilfom. Ed. fF. Barton, We notice by the dispatches ,that our old and-highly esteemed friend, Ned Burton, is being urged by Congressman Pacheco for Surerintendent of the San Francisco Mint. We hope he will be appointed, for we know a better or more worthy man can hot be found for the position, He is everthing that goes to make up a first-class man. We have no faith ,however, that he will get it, for the reason that few men of his caliber ever receive a good appointment. Ned. Burton, ‘many years ago, was a Senator from this county, and he acquitted himself with honor to himself and his constituents, — Stop the Squirting. A prominent physician says that the Chinese habit of squirting -water on ¢lothes in ironing is very dangerous should be stopped. Ulcerated tonsilsare common among Chinese laundrymen, hence the water squirted is often impregnated with germs of diseases, which are ironed into the clothes and thus scattered universally into all clasees of society. Either the squirting or the patronage given to China laundries should be stopped, ‘ a Oe Large Crashing. The Virginia. City’ Company at Chapman’s Ranch have two hundred their dumps.
